Any opinions on the quality of the side and down images of a lowrance gen 2 with their sonar hub added to get chirp vs the Garmin 840 units with their black box added for chirp? Both units using the TM150 transducer.
Thanks

I don't know but I'm getting sick of hearing about Garmin and nobody posting any user screen shots! Yeah I've seen the promo shots but I want to see images from guys like us. (Non sponsored)
I'm not sure the TM 150 is shipping yet???? Anyone know for sure? I haven't heard anyone on any forum talk about it yet.
As soon as I see the shipping confirmation at THT ...I'll let you guys know...

How is the average crappie fisherman going to benefit from chirp? From what I've read it's great in water deeper than 100' and I've also seen Fishtons images. I'd be willing to say most crappie fishermen never fish deeper than 25', I don't see the advantage. Target separation, is it better than di?
Justinp, from what I've seen chirp is much better 2D and if incorporated with DI, it would give much more detail, at least that
is what I'm hoping to see. All I've seen so far are U-tube videos and don't know if they are real or doctored up.
I dont think CHIRP in shallow water wiil be as much about "target separation" as it is the total amount of data from the "string of frequency band pulses" that can be processed by the CHIRP xducer/processor combination...
More data is always, always, always better for more detailed images...

I figure it like this:
If chirp tech can show me accurately that brush pile x is holding crappie, then I'm fishing it hard.
I'm still just guessing in reality
The reason there are so few screenshots from the Garmin is that there is an issue on the screen capture system via the network, i.e white lines across the screen.
I doubt I'd scrap my Touches for anything regardless how good it MIGHT be. But, if I needed to make a new purchase I'd sure give both Garmin and Raymarine a long hard look. They both may be new to shallow, fresh water fishing but, they both have great reps
for saltwater and I'm thinking they will both be worthy competitors for L and HB and force both off their duffs and budget more towards R&D and new product development. Just sayin.....
Until we get a camera down in the brush there is going to be some interpretation required when looking at any of our current systems. Where I fish, I can pretty accurately determine when there are crappie on a certain structure but, I never know for sure until I drop a jig into it and catch one. So, it's just an educated guess. What I'm hoping to eventually find is a system that more accurately tell me where the crappie are! BUT, when that happens, I'm thinking the fun will go out of fishing and I'll have to find something more challenging to do with my time. It sure is fun to get out with nature and enjoy the frustration of trying to catch a new record crappie. And it doesn't mean I'm going back to my old 1950's technology either!
I have a Garmin 70DV and am very satisfied with it. Haven't added the black box yet, and am undecided if I will. If you want some screen shots, PM me and I will send you an address so you can make a donation towards the purchase of a black box. Meanwhile, I'll just just enjoy what I have. :biggrin
Black box adds chirp with a correct chirp transducer

Locate fish in cover? Down scan. I mostly two pole so I'm fishing a known location. My df on the bow is usually split 3 ways, chart, 2d and ds. Once I'm close to the wp I'll put the tm down and troll toward it. It shows up on the 2d first and then on the ds, when I see it on the ds I throw a buoy out for a reference point. If there are fish in the cover most of the time they will show up in the ds.
One of the guys I fish with some fishes only stake beds and can tell on 2d if there are fish in his beds. IMO you can't do that with brush and 2d, at least I cant.
My opinion of Chirp, for most shallow water fishermen, it'll be useless. Down scan already does a better job of showing us what is really there. IMO the only thing it'll do is lighten up a bunch of guys wallets.
This image was taken from the tm with my HDS 8 and LSS-1. If you look on the left side of the ds you can see fish in the brush, not so on the 2d side.

I'm going to adjust what I do based on your reply.
I've been only using one rod and I got to change that.
I have a pretty old ff up front, no GPS, no downscan, just 2d.
Do you ever motor over brush to look at it from the wheel?
I do that if it's deep enough.
Got hds 9 at the wheel.
Thanks again
Brett I do motor over it at times, usually if it's only one bed and in deep water. If there are several beds close I usually use the tm.
