Anybody slaying the crappie at Patoka? Thinking about trying it again this week. Water temps? Fishing reports?
The lack of reports for this time of year usually means one thing.....things are catching fire across the state. I wish I had the week off, but I pretty much wish that every week.
aint that the truth
Went today, got on the water about 9:00 fished south lick area, water was up and dirty not muddy but stained, water temp was 69* just a bit turned very windy no stumps to tie up to all was under water so boat control was out of the question. Managed to catch about 50 all dinks with a couple 11 in. Black crappie that was almost solid black, one bass and one small 6in. Hybrid looking bass. Gave up on the wind about 1:30 and headed to the curbett for lunch. All were caught in 6 ft of water on a 1/16 oz. tube jig black with white skirt fished as slow as you could turn the handle.... It is just a short drive for me to South Lick but I have seen no reason to even get on the lake for a while now. Wind, bugs, dirty water and dropping water level takes all the fun out of it.
Thanks for the reports,,but after my escapades of last nite,,staying home and tending sore back, neck, shoulders, and leg..fell at 11:30 pm last nite off a rock wall of a old railroad grade cut into limestone wall about 10'. Did 1 & 1/2 backwards summersalts and landed on back fighting neighbors small forest fire with local volunteer fire dept. Thank god parachute training kicked in on landing as landed on upper back and neck. Every vertebre popped on landing and nothing broken but bruised all to heck. Dumb move as was holding on to a tree branch and it broke leaving me suspended falling backwards. I landed limber and that kept from breaking anything for sure. Upper side of leg has road rash about 8" long in the thigh area that will look black/yellow/blue before its all over. At the age of 64,,still limber as heck and glad I am healthy as heck. Enjoying the hot tub immensely. :Rofl Might just bass fish the West Fork tomorrow even tho its falling also.
Yea, forgot to mention the gnats They were so bad today they drove me nuts
Well,,we got 3.2 inches of rain yesterday again, and since last Sat..about 5-6 inches total in places especially around Patoka. They quit pulling the lake and shut it down due to flooding of streams, creeks and rivers around Patoka..and its now going back up again. Everything running around my area is pure mud.

Not what I wanted to here, planned on going up there mon. Or Tuesday. Maybe not now. My season has been a bust so far
After this cold and rain,,I figure its going to pop..time to fish even if they do pull it down. Right now lake is rising and I plan on hitting it either Mon, or Tues to long line or pull cranks as well as throw a jig. Lake is still rising, I like the high water fishing myself.
I just had my motor worked on. I'm going to head out to the main lake tomorrow to try it out. might throw a line too.
0.3 inches last nite again,,Wildcatter, if you make it out,,give us a water temp reading, please? thx.
Just got back in from Patoka. Water temp was 65-66. Found some fish off the banks. Should get better by next week end.
I found pretty much the same temps on Saturday. Wind was blowing harder than the weatherman said. Found a few trolling in about 12-15 ft in the walls area. Water was still pretty muddy in the creeks but clearer towards the main lake. I'm headed out again this Thursday.
Hammered Patoka today,,first hit Painter Creek, at 7:30am, which looked awesome, and spent 2.5 hrs trolling bandits and long lining jigs with various colors of tubes loaded with nibbles,,1 dink male crappie, 1-12" striper, and 1 dink yellow bass..water temp was 65 to 67 by the time I pulled up and moved to Walls..launched there,,it was pretty muddy and water temp was kept getting colder the farther up I went all the way down to 66 again..so moved back down below Walls and had 71.4 for max temp I found. I threw a lot of diff baits and colors at areas I always connected on fish and nada on anything,,then started long lining RR's with greenblack and finally yellow/white worked good also. I ended up catching 20 dinks total,,no keepers. When I jig fished I hit all the standing timber, fished the banks, rocks, weed lines, drop offs, creek channels, you name it. I have to say,,never seen Patoka this troublesome for 8.5 hrs of fishing. All crappies caught were small males, and black,,,awesome looking. Water below Walls, cleaned up and was stained then much clearer the closer to Osborne you got. Saw a few other fishermen,,but they weren't ccatching nothing to speak of,,not even any lg. mouth bass for those that were chasing them as I chatted with a few when they came over to see what I was catching. One idiot was shooting a pistol out of a Ranger Boat couple of different places he was fishing around Walls..I never did figure that out or what he was shooting at. Will try it again later this week and see how it goes.
For the guys that were Turkey Hunting Patoka,,,heard a Tom gobble at Painter Creek in the morning,,and at noon,,heard another one gobble above Walls..figure that one out too. All this spring, fishing Patoka I didn't hear a bird gobble one time till today.
Thinking about trying it tomorrow. It has been a tough year on Patoka so far. Thursday looks like a strip pit gill day.
They can't stay turned off forever, and have to spawn at some point. You all keep plugging away, you are bound to find them sooner or later. :ThumbsUp
Going to be a big come down if all I get are those dinks after fishing Barkley last week.
Light wind all day,,sunny and scattered clouds, good looking water, lake stable and 3.7' high,,and at 11:30 am looked up and saw a 3/4 moon shining. :) Not hardly any fishing pressure anywhere at all with the whole lake to yourself. Yeppers,,the fish will turn on over Memorial Day weekend with all the pleasure boaters out there. :Rofl
Raporter, you know that lake better than I,,I bet yu nail them .
I'm going to try to get out there again Thursday before all the weekenders get there.
Could not find the crappies yesterday. Did manage a 19 inch walleye though.Attachment 162965
No matter what happens the crappie are going to spawn or absorb there eggs. Should happen around the 28th New Moon.
I think that is why I am only catching little dink males that are super black. But,,have never seen the whole lake spawn all at once and it could be happening. Wished I knew more but that is just my guess.
I did make it out this afternoon. Caught enough dinks and smaller dinks to keep me wondering. Why am I out here. Then I caught a 2# walleye. Then wasn't so bad, then found what I was looking for. Some nice crappie. Just got done cleaning fish and the females still had eggs. Did bring home enough for a mess. Didn't want to try and caught all of em. Hope they are in the area in a few weeks.
