Do-it molds

Hey guys I am new to crappie fishing and also tackle making! Just wondering what are your guys must have jig molds for crappie fishing? Thanks for the help

If you are just pouring jigs for yourself then there are a bunch of different styles available to you. Just pic the style you like that is available. I have a chub head mold that I really like for crappie. You also have the old standby round head. Aspirin heads have their fans. I would look for the one with a natural look.CF

Pony or horse head and round head are all I ever use personally. I make tons of different heads, but only those two are in my rods each day.

I am the same way. Love the pony heads and use the round heads when not pulling the pony's.

I also fish mostly Poney Heads but if just getting started and fishing mainly plastics it's hard to go wrong with the old standby Ball Head with a barb.

I made my own molds for flat sided jig heads to take smaller hooks. For my tastes and uses i feel most heads use a hook a size to big most of the time and more so if im also targeting bluegill.

Roundhead jig,Staggered Barb 1/32-1/16 oz and 3/32 -3/16 oz molds you can tye jig's,use with plastics (crappie tubes) inside/ outside crappie tubes and work good with grubes!!! Works on plastic's without super Glue!!!

I suggest buying some pre-made samples of the various jig styles to try. After you have tested them, get the molds.

I'll be selling some of my do-it molds in a little while so keep your eyes on the personal classified section, my CDC brothers always get first shot before they go to ebay. 1/32, 1/16, and 1/8 pro molds, both ball and barb.

I pour both ball head and pony head jigs from 1/32 to 1/8. I started with a 1/32- 1/16 pony head and over the years have picked several more. The only advise I have would be to buy production molds for the jigs you use the most.

I have a lot of styles. I am working on another mod or two but I second Justin61 on production molds. You can go round head and do the Stumphunter smash to the head to make it work for 3D eyes.

Something to consider is how much time you want to spend pouring what you need. The one of each size mold is good for the odd sizes you will need from time to time but very slow to pour hundreds of heads. The pro molds usually fit better, generate less flash, and pour 7 or 8 at a time. They cut down on the bench time quite a bit. My minnow head mold is a onesie and I like em so much that I just bite the bullet and spend the time needed.

Keep in mind pony heads are off limits if you plan to sell! Copy rights owned by blakemore ! Also they are not what I recommend for a beginner ! You need cane swivels, split ring, blades gets expensive. If your lead is not hot enough or lots of impurities won't pour right! I would stick with a round ball head. If you plan to tie them collerless is the way to go if you plan to just add soft plastics collar with barb. In case your thinking you might want to get into it with the thoughts of making money ? I did to... You probably won't just my .02 . For me the most satisfying hobby to catch 100+ fish on my own jigs ...

I don't plan to sell my jigs! Just make them for some friends, and myself! Thanks I will stick with a round ball head! What's your favorite sizes for crappies?

I like the 1/32 to 1/4 oz round head with barb. The barb will hold a plastic grub or I can cut it off for the ones I tie. I hand paint, not dip with vinyl or finger nail polish. They may need a coat of white first or 2 or more coats.

I agree with Lifebite, if just starting ball heads are the easiest. But once you get bit with the bug watch out. I pour my own pony heads and some days it's easy and some days it will tax all the patience you have but it's fun. Started pouring then painting. Great hobby and very satisfying.

Oh coming from a fisherman view...how do you set up to fish for crappie? Push, pull,? Deep clear water shallow murkie? Because weights are very important! I just don't want you to spend money right out of the gate for molds to gather dust! My home lake ( ball head jig) 1/16, at .07-1.0 mph. the jigs swim at 9' foot deep, 1/24 about 5' deep 1/32 about 2'-3' deep. All critical when targeting suspended fish over bait. I pull ( long line troll) multiple rods diffrent lengths with about 30 yards of line out. This achieves a school of bait look crappie target. Hope this helps.

I was taught by a pro. Guide 6lb test hi viz line and ball head jigs! Look up on you tube trolling for crappie and you will learn a lot. The long troll with several rods will load the boat!!
