Just curious. If you have a limit of crappie do you have to stop fishing or can you cull/upgrade? I know bass fishermen can have a limit in the box and can continue to cull/upgrade.

Nope. Start culling when your 1 away.
Why cull. There all good fish. Ones you toss back might not recover from stress. I just set my bar at 12" everything under goes back. Be fortunate to get a limit.
Thanks for the info Hotrod. Not trying to be greedy, you just never know when you could catch a wall hanger this time of year.
Kinda a gray area, I'd do like Hotrod suggested and stay a couple under the limit. They say once you put your hand on the fish you are in possession of it, if it puts you over the limit then you are in the wrong. My thoughts on that is wouldn't the same hold true with a short fish?
I got stopped once with a limit and was still fishing since I caught them so fast and wanted to just fish and catch and release. Told them that and had no problem don't know what they would say if I had number 31 hanging on my pole.
When I catch limit of fish, I had a really good day. That wall hanger will be there for me tomorrow.
Yep, I know that the limit in the box and 1 on a hook is over limit for sure.
Back then it was a 20 mile trip in the other direction than home. $20 court cost, $25 for the fine and they kept my catch.
This is what a warden at Butla told me. You got a limit in the box you catch another fish and he see's you it's over the limit. Rarely do I get to that point but times their really biting and I want to fish I stop keeping a couple shy then return everything I catch after that. If I get ready to go and their still biting I'll finish a limit. If not I still go home with plenty of fish for me.
What's a limit?
Well that don't seem right . If i think i am close i will stop and count them . What if it is 1st first or 30th fish . If you cull you cull . We have no length limit here . So if i catch a hundred and throw them all back did i catch a hundred or did i catch zero ?
Doesn't sound right to me either. What if you were trolling and just put the limit fish in the box, and then caught another one while other poles were still out?
I fish Cave Run here in eastern Ky. And while we have no size limit we do have a 30 fish daily limit I usually start out keeping 10 inchers and when I get 20 or so I raise my size limit to 11 or 12 inches and if I can get a limit of fish in that range I figure I have had an excellent day. As far as I know here you can catch all the crappie you wont after catching your limit just as long as they don't go in the live well. Another thing I didn't know until a few years ago is that a warden can't count your fish once you have pulled your boat out of the water.
Had them count mine last week and weigh them .
WAS TOLD BY A WARDEN THAT ONCE YOU HAVE THE LIMIT AND YOU GET THE NEXT ONE IN THE BOAT YOU ARE ILLEGAL EVEN IF YOU RELEASE .nonono
I think you could beat it as long as you don't have too many in your box, just not worth the hassel. My question is, if you are over the limit when a legal size fish gets on your line wouldn't you also be guilty of having a short fish when it got on your line, same concept, you got him?:dono
A lot of times 5 different wardens will tell you 5 different things on something like this.
The only opinion that counts is the judges. The question is "do you want to go to court?".
If not, stop fishing when the last fish of the limit hits the livewell / ice chest.
If the water keeps rising and the wind keeps blowing we won't have to worry about limits. In my opinion though, as soon as you have a daily limit in your boat, you'd need to stop fishing. Do your culling before you have a limit.
Jeez, don't any of y'all carry a washin machine in your truck?:biggrin
That's the answer .
Clearly not worth the hassle but I don't buy for one second that it would stand up in court. I troll cranks baits for cat fish and happen to catch a limit of crappie. Write me sticker.
Wouldn't the same logic have to apply in the gulf. Are they really gonna to write me a ticket for catching an extra red fish I plan to release when I'm trying to fill out a limit of specks?
What it boils down to in IMO is that you run into miserable people in all walks of life and it's sad. That said there are a ton of really good game a fish guys out there that do a lot for our sport(s).
debating about something silly. just stop one short. is two fillets really that important?
Use to fish Bee lake a lot and every time I went the game wardens would pull up in a boat and check you over real good. Only lake that has ever happened to me all other lakes they check me at the ramp.As far as the limit question there is always another day for that big fish no need to cull unless fishing a tourney and the 10 inch fish are better eating IMO
Got checked on the water and at the ramp on Ky lake in the same day, not worth the hassel if you have a length limit on your lake and have a limit of fish be happy with what you have for the day. That wall hanger will be their for the next fishing trip:)
