Congrats to CrappieBuster (Derek Frick) and his partner Ray Koon on their second place finish (Amateur Division) in this past weekends Crappie USA super event held at Lake Murray. Looking at the winners, it's obvious that the jig bite was on, as the top 3 teams in the semi pro, and first place in the amateur division are renown for their prowess at the art of one pole jig fishing docks and structure.

This was a two day event, 7 fish per day weighed in. I do not believe Derek is related to the other two who are a father and son.

Great job Derek and Ray, did you troll or one pole or both.

I am pretty sure they were trolling but if not they were definetly tight lining and the two frick teams on semi pro side are brothers

Congrats again to Derek and Ray, hate I could fish this one. I know they trolled both days y'all.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I was going to post a report, but just haven't gotten around to it.

We did, in fact, long line troll both days up the lake. Friday was much better for us than Saturday. We weighed 11.20 lb Friday, but the spots we were fishing were relatively small and we knew it was going to get tough come Saturday morning. And it did! We caught 32 fish Friday and were culling 1.25 lb fish early. By 11:00 AM the bite slowed down and we covered a lot of water and caught a few more fish to upgrade. Saturday morning it was grind from the get go. It took us till 9:30 AM to find 7 fish and we badly needed some big fish. We searched and searched till the end of the day and never did find any kickers. We had two nice fish hooked and both pulled off before getting the net on them. Needless to say, we were a little bit discouraged on the way to the scales. We weighed in 8.82 lb Saturday and were very fortunate to maintain our second place finish. I believe we caught around 25 fish Saturday and had nothing in comparison to the size of Friday's fish. Lucky for us, the bite seemed to diminish for everybody in our division except for the leaders who expanded the gap between us and them with another solid day 2 sack.

The dock fishermen were at the top of both boards. As a matter of fact, 4 of the top 5 teams on the Semi-pro side were casting/jigging and I know the winning team in the Amateur division was doing the same.

It was great two days of fishing and I really enjoyed every minute of it! I'm glad that Crappie USA held an event on Lake Murray and I hope they return in the future!

I didnt know you were so much into the tourneys Derek. Looks like you know your stuff though. Congrats.:)

Congrats guys, Derek are you related to Todd and Leonard Frick? Those guys are some of the best jig fisherman around, they still owe me a fishing trip :)

Those were two day weights. We fished Friday and Saturday and weighed 7 fish both days for 14 going a total of 20.02 lb.

I'm sure we are related WAY down the line somewhere, but not closely kin. They are from across "the pond" as we refer to Lake Murray when referring to places around Lexington. I'm from the Chapin/Little Mountain area and they are from the Leesville area.

I'll second that they are some of the best jig fishermen around! I'll make no bones about it; my favorite way to fish is with the jig pole or ultralight, but I've never caught the size fish those fellas find on just about any lake they fish! They surely know their stuff.
