Lake Front Property & Retirement

The wife and I are going to be retiring from Illinois to Florida and are looking to buy a property right on the water on a really good fishing lake . Kind of a dream of ours for quite awhile. Do any of you guys or gals have any thoughts to share about what lake to move to so we fulfill our dream plans? We love crappie fishin and I like to chase a big bass once in awhile. I've been reading about Lake Talquin it seems to far north, we want stay a little warmer and avoid the cold weather in the winter if we can. We have no particular spot in mind so we are open to any help you could give us. Budget would be $350,000 or hopefully less!

Lake Talquin is a winner for year round fishing but it does get colder than further south....but the further south you go the more expensive it get's for water front. For $350,000a you can buy a mansion on Talquin. There is a line, more of less across the state in the Lakeland area. Colder north and warmer south. Of course the line is debatable. Good luck on moving down here. Warm weather and no income tax.

Unless you are certain of the area you want to live...rent first..and try several spots. The lakes down here are all just a bit different...and so is the housing. You can get anything on the water from a mansion to a camper...depending on the amount you wish to spend..and your requirements for happy living. What else do you need to be near? Water is nice...but some of it is very remote. I love fresh water fishing...and loved the Lake Placid area when we had a place down there. Many lakes there to choose from..and many types of housing. But...as we aged...we needed to be nearer to quality medical care, too...so moved up to the Orlando/Winter Haven area. (Also better transportation..ie...airports. Good Luck !! Its really hard to go wrong !

Good advice.............Lakes everywhere. We live in Lake county (central Florida) and have what I consider some of the best lakes and rivers in the state and it's central.... so there are so many other lakes withing easy driving distance including both east and west salt water destinations. Welcome to Florida!

Rent first is a very good idea and Lake County would be an excellent area to land first and go from there. You may decide to never leave the area.

Avon Park, Sebring area is good. Lots of lakes and Kissimmee River. Astor area is good. St. Johns River will get you to many of other lakes in that area. As above rent till you decide. Some areas have high traffic. Take a vacation to different areas.

That's a great area. You better jump on that.

I agree with speckanator, lake county is an ideal area for commutability for all types of fishing a few options of lakes to live/fish on for daily fun. I live in polk, but wouldnt recommend it. I hope you're able to make some visits and check areas out. Best of luck and welcome!!

Many of the St. John's Lakes are the most consistent bass and crappie fisheries in Central Florida...however, you cannot live on many of these lakes due to conservation. There may be a correlation here (another thread). You can live on the actual St. John's River, and have some of the lakes and river at your doorstep. Another area to look into and good value can be had in the Kissimmee area... there are numerous connected lakes, big and small, in this area. You can get away from the Orlando conveniences, but it's not too far. So many options for you guys. I am so jealous! Good for you!
