What is the difference? Is dipping rod shorter?
No the dippin rod is a much lighter action.
Dippin - light act 10ft
Draga - med heavy 10ft
Pulling - med heavy 11ft
Meat dragga is a much heavier rod. If you've ever seen a salmon/steelhead type of rod you'll have a good picture of what it is like. I believe they are actually made off of salmon/steelhead blanks. Not 100% on that though. The dippin stick is very light action. As my dad says, "The tip will move if a mosquito lands on it".
Thanks EB for describing the rods. The Dipping rod is used for vertical jigging with lighter baits. Meat Draga and Pulling rods can handle heavier tackle (1/4 oz plus an 1/8 oz). Additional information is at toddhuckabeerods.com.
There isn't another 10' or 11' rod made today or yesterday or next week that can compare to a Huckabee Rod. I have a few other brands of rods but they just draw dust. I use the Meat Dragga and Pulling Rods with 2-1/4 or 2-5/16oz jigs all the time depending on technique. These rods handle the big baits and jigs and do not have the tip bend of a wimpy rod that puts arm and back strain on you from the weight after fishing with them all day. If you go with a Huckabee you will never go back.......Ranger
I used my new meat dragga with Todd Huckabee 3/29 next to my B&M Duck Commander which was also new. One outing and the commander is retired! The Todd Rod was so sensitive and enough back bone to handle a 50lb Blue Cat in my opinion. When the slabs hit you lift swing unhook and are back in the water in 20 seconds. I got home, made a call and bought two more Monday evening. Even with my Garcia bait cast reel attached (which is just for line storage only) I fished all day and never got tired holding that rod. I caught all my crappie on it and one 2.5 sand bass on the B&M. As Mark says, once you use a Huckabee or as I call them a Todd Rod you will not use anything else. Worth every penny.
Hat, most of the time mine are the same weight. But if I do use one heavier I always put it on bottom. I also never use less than 1/8 oz jigs.
Odie
Thanks Odie.
Hat
Same here Hat. Usually always the same size the heaviest being 5/16oz. And like Doug said already smallest is 1/8oz. While fishing on Kerr yesterday we used 2-1/8oz jigs and smaller baits. The light wind allowed us to use the smaller Jigheads. Wind and current dictates head size for me......Ranger
My two cents worth! Haven't used a Huckabee rod I've heard alot of great things about them.
But I would put those Cherokee Rods that Mr. Leland builds up against anything on the water!!! I love to use braid and not have to worry about a warranty!
I 've kinda held back responding to these posts on Huckabee's rods. They are a great rod for the techniques he and others use out of a boat. I talked at length with Todd couple of times about rods, when he was without the Quantum deal. We both agreed a Steelhead type blank was overall the best of all the qualities you look for in todays crappie fishing. First is hookset / backbone, then length / range and always you want a sensitive rod which graphite provides. I personally use a 9'-6" most of the time not too long or too short for alot of what I do. For pitching or casting a float or bait a 7-0' or 7'-6" is great especially in tight quarters shallow water fish like we have now. I could go on a windy post about this, honestly you don't need a boatload of rods any given time, with the exception of trolling of course. But here's whats true....10 years ago shelling out $100.0 plus on a rod for crappie was unheard of, So kudo's to Todd and myself for helping fisherman get more bang for the buck and more fish in the boat. And by the way Todd first used a 9'-0 blue steelhead rod from Crappie Pro when I made those for Larry, and those rods are still going strong.
Leland, how is my rod coming along? They will be on the bank soon!
Lip Rippers its good to see you posting again! Im sure everyone would love to see you at the weigh in Saturday? EB
IMHO, Leland's and Todd's are BOTh top of the line rods and worth every cent you pay for them. Leland has taught me alot over the years about crappie fishing and using quality rods. I have one of each and both go with me whenever and wherever I crappie fish. My wife has a rod that Leland built for her and she is pleased with it too.
Only rods I use. I prefer the 11 footer for most things. I don't even own any jigheads other than 1/8 and 1/4 ounce.
