Cane Creek update

I met Chris (CEB) today @ Cane Creek. Fishing was sort of slow, as an average. I caught 2 for the day, and Chris took a little time getting his limit. (I think he was being nice to me, because I went for a long time without a hit) Anyway, Cane Creek is a good looking lake for fall crappie. Chris was fishing with rosie reds, I was trying jigs spider rigged. I couldn't catch anything on my spider rigged jigs. Chris was kind enough to loan me some reds, and I caught one with it. I have a question for Jerry (LA stumpjumper). I was using high vis line today in the clear water. My only hits came on a roadrunner casted over the hydrilla w/ fluorocarbon line. CEB says you wore him out last week with that. Do you need to use low visibility line on Cane Creek, or was I not holding my mouth right with my other poles? I'm gonna try to go back down to CC sometime soon while it is cool. That wind blew us around a lot today, wore out the trolling motor. I have to brag for CEB also, he boated a 2 lb crappie. Had a great time, learned a lot from Chris, and hopefully it will pay off next fishing trip. Thanks Chris, & we'll see you guys on the water!:D

Had a good time fishing with you on Friday. I know the lake will produce more the next trip. To sum it up, the wind was terrible friday and saturday. The bite was pretty good friday, then slacked off a lot on sat, then picked back up a little on sun.

Jerry cooked us up a fantastic meal on Sat night. He cooked up some fresh crappie with pups, fries, and coleslaw. Topped off with cobbler. Good friends, good food, and the beautiful outdoors this time of year. Hope to do it again soon, although most of the crappie on the next trip will be catch-n-release, as the freezer is about to pop (so the significant other says).

Jerry also mentioned to me the rental RV down at the campground. It's 65 buck/night with sat tv and room for 4 or 5 guys. We need to get a group of us down there soon.

If we meet up next time, I'll take some of those paperlips off of your hands. I wasn't sure if you were stockpiling the freezer for the winter on friday, or I would have taken some home with me. I changed out the line for low vis green on my long poles & rigged them up for rosey reds for next time. I may get down there friday after thanksgiving. I loved Cane Creek. Hopefully I'll get down there & get a limit.

In addition to the Hi-vis line question, Have you had any luck on nightstalking on Cane Creek?

Randy I bet you could still get your hands on some of those crappie filets. CEB's significant other Eunice does not eat the tail portion of the filet as she is from the upper crust of society. Apparently in her homeland the tail portion of the fish is what her ancestors gave to the pesants thus she will not eat them.

Peculiar woman but at least she lets CEB go fishing.

TJ...Cane Creek is just outside of Star City. I should be down there for the weekend after Thanksgiving, just to visit the in-laws.;) I'm afraid that everyone will have deer on the brain after Thanksgiving. I must also park cars for the game. Should be very profitable.:D

Jerry will be down there for the week. Wish that I could have traded places with him. He said that he will post another report mid-week.

I feel your pain. Its killing me seeing him catch all those slabs without me. Heck I need you to post some pics of those deer your killin, cause I'm not killin or catchin. To make things worse while jumping thur the roof on one of Darren McFaddens touchdowns Saturday night, I turned my ankle. Now my freakin foots swole up like you soaked it in viagra. Thats not going to help me get back in the boat anytime soon.

I really enjoyed Chris coming down and fishing this weekend, he really did well on the rosie reds. I caught some crappie, but didn't limit out, but caught some good fish. I can't post any pics because I lost my camera some time after I took pics of Mondays catch. I think I put it on the bumper of the truck and forgot it when I went to town to get my propane tank filled. I was so aggrevated with myself about losing my camera that I packed up and brought the camper home on Tuesday morning. It was too stormy and windy today to fish so I went deer hunting. Will probably get back to Cane Creek or lake Monticello tomorrow. Hope you guys get down to Cane Creek this fall while they are biting. Let me know when y'all are coming and I'll meet y'all there. Randy, I use low visibility line when fishing in Cane Creek, the water is pretty clear. And I have never tried nightstalking in there, but it would probably be pretty good.

Dang Jerry. I hate to hear about the bad experience. I know you were looking forward to this week for awhile.:( I'll be back down there the weekend after Thanksgiving. This is not the type story we like hearing from down south. I feel your pain though. I have done the same type thing a time or two myself. With all the gear we take its a wonder we dont loose more than we do.

How is your deer season going so far? Mine has been slow but the rut is on, and I am going Fri thru Sun with my 7 year old. I hope we at least see some possible shooters. I would love my kid to be with me when I bagged a good one. I dont know who would love it more.

Gooch you can't eat them horns! That's why I took a 6pt. and the wife took a doe. I think we am going on a big doe hunt. We have to many. Gotta take care of the numbers you know.

Went to CC this weekend. Ran upon Dr. Pepper down there Sat. morning. It was kinda like, "hey, I think I know you." The fish Sat. were extremely slow. I spent a lot of time on a couple of spots that produced a few weekends ago, but nothing. That afternoon, I found a few just inside the treeline. I'm not sure if they weren't biting well at all, or if they had just moved back towards the treeline (about 50yds) from my usual spots. I noticed that the hydrilla didn't look the same on the graph compared to a couple of weeks ago. I ended with 4 nice keepers. DP ended with about the same, but had a dozen or so throwbacks. I'm pretty sure he caught those on the shallow side of the treeline. All in all, I was pretty disappointed. It was by far my worst day out there. Bobberwatcher, I saw the post where you were down there this weekend. I'm not sure if I saw you or not. What kind of boat were you in?
I also ran into another guy that reads the posts. He said, "hey, aren't you ceb? I noticed your boat." It's nice being able to sit back and BS with other guys while fishin. I didn't get your name, so now you gotta register and tell me.:D

Sunday morning, I got my revenge. I concentrated on the area just inside the treeline about 3-5' deep (a little bit deeper than previously). I started off with 4 keepers quick. Then went an hour or so without a bite. Finished off the 15 fish limit by 11:00 in one spot. I'll post a pic or two of the catch later.

Ceb the last time I was at Cane Creek they had moved back to the tree line. They haven't been hitting the roadrunner lately either. They usually stop chasing the roadrunner when the water temp gets in the mid 50's for me. Seems that they want something stationary or real slow. Willie has been doing real well ( the one in the small plastic boat) he has been using a jig under a bobber, casting and reeling back real slow. Thats what I've been doing lately with some pretty good success. Steve is still doing good on the rosie reds, he is tying up and casting away from the boat. They are catching fish about 5 ft. deep.

Ceb, is that you on the first post on this thread? If so, I did see you today. I was in the Break-Up War Eagle with the 25 Merc. I didn't get to fish yesterday, but was there this morning around 7. I think we exchanged a couple of stare downs.. I was thinking, "I have seen that guy.. i think". I guess I should have come over and struck up a conversation. Looked like you wore them out. I saw you dippin up several. I had 2 10 inchers and a 13.5. (The one I held up to show you). I bet I caught 40 or so crappie/green carp, but could only keep 3. I took a picture once I got home to my camera. Something about the fish at Cane Creek. Seems like alcoholics to me!! :D

Even though I didn't catch many keepers, I was very impressed with this place. I quit counting how many I threw back. That has me optimistic about the next couple of years when they grow some. The guy, Willie, that Jerry mentioned pulled up beside me and started wearing them out. I did more rigging than fishing trying to mimic what he was doing. I caught more smaller ones on jigs. The keepers were on minnnows that CEB gave me. I don't remember if I thanked him properly. I didn't see a bait stand that was open and ended up on the lake with just my jigs.
I wished I had a video camara with me; I would be $10,000 richer. A fellow snagged a duck. It was the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. He was able to release it unharmed; the duck that is. That duck just about flogged him to death when he got it to the boat.

I forgot to ask CEB...I didn't notice which way the dam was in relation to where we were fishing. But, I am sure there was a current in the lake on Friday. Currents always jinx me.

Yep, now that you mention it, I do remember you holding up that big ol' fat crappie and sayin "That just made the trip there." I love those biguns, you go to set the hook and just feel DEAD weight, can't hardly turn em to come up. Since you got that one, I'm sure I will see you back out there. I'll know who to look for now.:D

Hey, it was just as good hearing you tell the story. I can't believe that his ol' lady stayed in the boat.:D One scared the crap out of me out there too. Dam duck surfaced right beside me. I didn't really know who was going to attack who. I always had a paddle in my hand when scullin' the jon boat, but I never have one handy these days. BTW...you better watch out for those mentally challanged geese at the ramp. I like honkin at 'em. Had one chase me from 30' away.

On the current, I really couldn't tell you. I do know that they lowered the lake at the beginning of fall. The lake even looked a little bit lower this past weekend than it did a couple of weeks ago. How fast was it?

DP, there shouldn't be any current, the lake has been 2-3 ft. low due to lack of rain. There is nothing flowing over the spillway.

Got my new camera Friday, it was here when I got back from fishing L. Monticello. The picture I posted of my Granddaughters were the first pics from it. It really is a good camera, hope I can hang on to this one.

I talked to Willie yesterday and he said he was just a chunkin it out there and a slow retreive about 4 feet deep. I told him I used an orange headed crappie thunder with a chart body and tail doing the same thing and NOTHING.. even tried it under a slip cork with a slow retrieve. He seemed like a nice enough fellow and told me next time I am there and he is "on em" to pull right up beside him and help him out.

He is using a small clip-on bobber. That way the jig stays at the same depth. The jig is staying just above the hydrilla and the crappie are hiding in pockets of the hydrilla, he is covering a lot of area by casting and a very slow retreive. With the clear water and the crappie so near the top they are very spooky of boats and trolling motors.

Another thing to think about...I've noticed that the crappie are very stacked up, meaning that you will catch 3-5 crappie out of one spot. But, you get off that spot by a foot, and you won't catch a single one. Willie has his known spots, he isn't just throwing out there blindly. You can also judge how tough the fishing is by counting the number of times Willie moves to his different holes.:D

Sounds like we need to rename Willie to "Slick Willie" :D (No wait, that name has already been taken by Clinton. My bad).

I'll try to give you a couple days notice and maybe we can hook up and wear some crappie out. I really want to check out your setup. Looks like you had it down to a science on Sunday. Sounds good. I should be back down there on Sat. Till I see you again, here is a brief description of my set-up and technique for slow-trollin/spiderriggin/titelining rosey reds.

13' pole rigged with 8lb line. Put on a 1/2 oz. egg sinker, then a red bead, and then a regular swivel. The red bead helps the sinker from getting stuck on top of the swivel. Onto the swivel, tie a 8-12" leader of 6lb line with a long shank, thin wire #4 cricket hook. This rig works good for places with lots of hang-ups. Usually you can pop the weight to get it free, or you can easily straighten out the thin wire hook. If needed, the 6lb leader will break first, leaving you with the rig minus the hook.

For technique. If there isn't any wind, just bump the trolling motor for a second or two and coast until the boat come to a stop, then repeat. If there is a wind, I prefer going directly into the wind just as above. Once past your spot, let the wind slowly push you back over it while bumping the trolling motor to slow you down and correct for rotation. Out there on Cane Creek, set your rods about 2&1/2' to 5' deep. You want the tips of the poles to be less than 6" above the surface. When the crappie grabs it, you will know it. He will bend that rod tip all the way under the surface.
