Not sure what your questions is. Refer to my original post about 10", then 11" and then 12" - Why not. I have a program that I will think replace all the crappie I catch in a year by doing a simple thing. I am going to see if Slab can have lunch with me when he returns north. If he feels that it is worth posting, I will finish my research and post it. Simple to replace my 500 to 1,000 crappie I catch a year. No money involved, just some effort.
Personally I believe a quantity limit (say 15 daily) is of more help than the size limit.
I'd be 100% for a 12" minimum on Talquin.
I guess I don't understand the poll. 10" then 11" means exactly what?
12" in three years is another option? Does that mean no limit till three years from now? Why ask about a three year wait?
Just not clear in my head. Maybe there's another thread that talks about those options. I know it's early in the morning but I'm confused.
Why a limit?
yikes - yelim, that will open up Pandora's box, hope chest, cooler, refrigerator,
freezer... Have enough problems now with so many "wannabee" week end warriors
keeping anything that almost encludes their eyes touching their bottoms.--With all the
cold - snow & freezes up Norht pressure has been tremendous on Southern Blacks....
I fish Florida every year and catch my share of fish. This past year we boated 1281 fish and kept less than 40 to eat, the rest is still there to catch again. I like to eat the 10" to 12" fish.
It's biblical to practice good stewardship. When blessed with a harvest this season prepare and store some seed for the next seasons to come. I am teaching many youth how to enjoy these great resources and want them to be here for many years to come. I believe in leaving things better when I leave than they were when I arrived or used them.
Since I've joined Crappie.com, the number of fishermen practicing catch and release to some degree seems to be growing. We all love the taste of crappie....no denying it, but it is very reassuring to know there are many thoughtful and responsible people are out there taking care of our fisheries. Thanks for this discussion....I really enjoy it!
The 10" then 11" was for those who want to do 10" and then increase to 11" to help the fishery.
10" would mean 10" and stay there. I should have added statewide, but I thought that it would come up in the discussion.
12" would be a goal for select lakes.
I am sure that there will a lot of opinions, the readers are increasing, but of course on a small percentage post.
Chuck
Thanks guys for you input, that is what Crappie.com is all about. Yes, many people are starting to impose a 11 or 12" on their catches. I personally like to have a 12" filet that equals 2 10". Just my preference.
I think I have come across something that will help all of us protect and increase the crappie fishery with not cost and very little effort. Need to discuss with the powers to be and get their opinion.
I thank The Lord every day for the fish he produces and allows me to catch. Though it is our responsibility to manage the blessings God provides.
Genesis 1:26
Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground."
Lake Talquin is a great resource and it is our job to keep it that way. Due to the added fishing pressure we are trying to decide what is best for this body of water. We mean no harm to anyone, but are trying to get definitive research to see what everyone's opinion is. You have given yours in favor of no limit at all and it is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to explain your reasoning!
Interesting how the poll is shaping up, but our votes are nothing more than opinions. It will take years of FWC research up the ying yang before any new regulation may be possible. Public hearings, studies, surveys, etc., all of that stuff is what government does. Commercial interest would be a factor as well. FWC could easily determine the fishery is healthy, the economy is served, and both are likely to remain so. Anyway, it doesn't hurt a thing for a dialogue to develop and folks to voice their opinions.
Everyone wants to catch a big fish, however there are lots of factors that enter into size limitations and setting limits. If it is done wrong, it can completely ruin a lake. I have seen that happen locally when a lake about 40 miles from here set a size limit at 10 inches. This caused overpopulation of small fish and stunted the growth. Now, the size limit has been off for years, but it is rare to catch a crappie over 7 or 8 inches and most run about 6 1/2 inches and are paper thin. Biologists need to do studies and sampling to determine if the lake can support such regulation. There are few lakes that can match the big four in Mississippi in size and numbers. When you go to their board and see the reports, it can make us all a bit envious, however what they've done there will not work everywhere. Hope a solution is found that makes Talquin a great fishery for you all.
Where did I say I was in favor of no limits. I ask a simple question and get smart remarks back. As you say, we must be good stewards of our environment. People that know me know I do not abuse this earth, including speckled perch. I rarely get to fish and keep very few when I do fish. And that includes all fish. That being said I don't need a bunch of laws telling me what I can and cannot do. I don't like to measure every fish and have to worry about was that one long enough or maybe a quarter of an inch short. If he is big enough throw it in the cooler, if not throw it back.
"
"Why a limit?" and then "

I'm the one whining?LOL

Calm down or this gets locked.
Limiting fish size is ok. Also limiting catch numbers would be good also. Take a look at your rig. How many poles do you use when trolling? How many times do you change baits trying to catch as many as you can. How many small ones die after they are released? I am not judging, I do the same, just asking questions. I don't like laws because I don't need laws. I control myself and try to do the right thing. I don't break laws, I just don't like the fact we need them because we can't control ourselves.
[QUOTE=flycaster;2639478]Flycaster, I have known you for a long time, but somewhere along the way something is wrong. I was not upset, just asking a question. I have been a supporter of Crappie.com since joininng. Since that is your feeling, do me a favor, lock this thread and while you are at it, remove my name from Crappie.com. It has been great knowing most of you, but I am going to enjoy the sport of fishing and not dealing with the attitudes of a few. My mother taught me that 10% of the people cause 90 % of the problems. I am not one of the 10%. Good luck and catch a bunch.Quote:

Flycaster, it looks like I have egg on my face. I miss read your post, please accept my apologizes. CC has done a great job in helping me appreciate crappie fishing and increased my catches of crappie over 12" (self imposed rule).
apologizes accepted.
We all enjoy your input to this great forum.
Hope to see you on the waters again. I have seen where your schedule is keeping you from Florida, but I know you will return.:fish
I am very happy we have guys like Chuck on the forum. We can never have too many folks who care about the future of crappie fishing. :ThumbsUp
26 votes and 1200 views. Must be a lot that dont agree with any options on this poll. Sure seems to be a lot of elitist opinions on here. People that come on and read trying to learn something would be scared away from some of the comments I have read. I believe the majority of people fishing for specks are minnow and cork guys not the ate up die hards we are. Remember its just fishing and supposed to be fun first not worrying what the next guy thinks at the ramp. Myself I live to fish and specks is probably my favorite and strive to keep the bigger fish. However if someone is within the limits of the law so be it and hope they are having a ball doing it. Am I worried on a major system like the St. Johns? No way shape or form without some natural disaster or man made disaster.
According to current FWC regulations on crappie there are only two lakes in the entire state that have a 10 inch minimum size limit on crappie…. Talquin andOkeechobee. One or two have a higher number limit than 25.
See: http://myfwc.com/fishing/freshwater/regulations/special
Lake Griffin - Leesburg area has 10" limit
Lake Medard - West of Tampa off Hwy 60 has 10" limit
Both imposed within past 2 yrs by FWC
That's good to know. FWC needs to update their website info.
I think size limits work in some places. I fish the big-o and I think the 10 in has worked so far. This year I`m seeing a lot of small fish, more then I can remember. Are they having a good year? Is it from man or god ? only time will tell. Lets hope its a little of both. We know the lords doing his part. Are we doing ares??
I think a 12 in. limit on Talquin would be great. I already stick to that. I also believe that with the way crappie reproduce that a 15-20 fish limit would help the fishery as much or more than a size limit.
Everythime i go to the Big O, i see all the pontoon boats at night in the Kissimmee river north & south of bridge from January through mid April almost stacked on top each
other 1/2 - 3/4 mile long - looks like medium size city sitting there with most of them
having between 25 & 40 rods out - catching every size crappie possible - don't see or
hear to many splashes back in water after catch. Can't answer about this year having
a lot of little ones. We fished tournament Feb 22nd and catch weight for FCC jumped
up 2 lbs over last year's catch weight for same number of fish.
Would love to have FWC due night check of pontoons on river..........Might answer
a lot of questions. (25 per person - period no 100 per boat so 10 people on pontoon
would be 250 keepers duh - easy math)
