Lantern Fishing

Hi ya'll any of ya'll ever heard of lantern fishing? I bumped into a buddy of mine at the tire store today and we got to talking about fishing. He said his wife is from down south and her family lantern fishes. Said they will hang up a couple lanterns close to the water off a limb to attact the bugs. Said the bugs hit it then die then fall in the water which attracts all the fish. Then they tie on a jig with a minnow on it and flip it out close to the lantern. Any of ya'll ever heard of doing this???

I've heard of people doing it. it should work. I've been wanting to try it, but mosquitoes are horrible around here thanks to all the rice fields.

man yea, works good.. keeps most of the bugs off you as well.. use to be a big thing but now its going to underwater lights that work really well too..

I fish at night off my pontoon on lake Norfork alot. It works for me.

The folks over at Reelfoot still do that some, but as Slabyanker said, in the bottoms the skeeters are a little tough and it's not real comfortable in mid summer. Norfork, Greers or Bull Shoals might be a little more comfortable without the mass of skeeters.

Sounds like it would be fun. I think I'm gonna try some night time fishing this summer. Usually do no fishing in summer, to hot and yo many people on the water

Old friend of mine did that for years and years on Greers and caught 1000's of fish through the years. That is the only way he fished.

Make sure you don't have a bright moon, it really makes your lantern pretty useless.

yall will think i'm nuts but this reminded me of a guy that i knew that honestly would pick up road kill in a plastic sack, say a coon full of maggots and would tie it out over a limb and would let the maggots fall to the water and then come back and fish under it.... sorry, i'm not that cheap!

The lantern does much more than draw insects.

The light basically draws in phytoplankton which is essentially micro algae. This is the basic bottom of your food chain.

This is helpful especially for your planktonic eating fish... For example, gizzard shad.

Ok so now you have the micro algae being drawn to the light, shad are being drawn to phytoplankton/micro algae and as you all know shad are the main food source for many of the fish in our lakes. That's when your crappie show up to eat the shad.

and find you a steep bank. On Norfork, we try to find a creek channel that runs up close to a bluff, usally the boat is tied to the bank on one end and the anchor is in 50-60 foot of water. And we use a submersible light as well. I"ve tried it in my home waters without as much luck.
