Has anyone dared to try Mallard Lake out yet this year?
Fished it the other day for about 4.5 hours caught 2 still a little early
I dared to try to drive around it a few weeks back. Needed a little grader work on the road!
That's our tax money at work right? It is bad!!!
Actually it is your license money (plus the 1/8th sales tax). That's the worst I've seen the east side of Mallard. The guys that manage the WMA used to drag it with a box blade. Don't know what's happened
Hasn't been right since the 2 year pipe replacement fiasco. The lake is still 2 foot low. Go figure.
I thought the road around Mallard was a county road.
Been seeing some boats at Big Lake lately. Not sure if they have been catching anything or not. I don't really see how they would as muddy as the water has been, but you never know. I haven't had a chance to get out there yet due to working on my truck. I plan on hiting the water Mon and tues though.
The levee roads are AGFC responsibilities. The east levee is definitely in bad shape. The county does grade it on occasion. They told us that it wouldn't help due to the limited amount of gravel. Before I left that district, we planned on filling the holes in with gravel until we could budget gravel for the whole east levee during the FY 14-15 year budget. I know this is only a quick fix but hopefully it will get fixed soon. The new Fisheries Supervisor has been made aware of it.
The money for this actually comes from Marine Fuel Tax money generated from fuel sales at marinas.
As for the crappie, we stocked it last fall and have requested it be stocked this fall.
Limbhanger13 is correct about the pipe replacement!! It has been an ordeal and caused several gray hairs. The lake is less than 10 inches from normal level at the lake from what I was told last week. If we got some more rain, they will be able to pump and get the lake back to normal.
Glad to hear you guys stocked it with crappie. That pipe deal sure was a heartbreaker for alot of people who enjoyed the lake. NEA has alot of great crappie fishing and im sure you guys will get mallard back to what it was 2,3,4 years ago. Thank you guys for working hard, without it places like hogue, mallard, poinsett, 75, sucken lands and so on would be painted purple.
Thanks for the reply Mojo.
RCC lol im learning quick you dont miss much or let much slide. lol you need your own tv show!
Just like the rest of miss. Co gravel roads. They grade the gravel into the ditch. If its raining on most of our gravel roads over here you proly gona need 4 wd
You ain't kidding. I live on one not far from the lake, and it gets bad. Our local farmer grades it more often than the county. He even cleared the hwy going to town when we got all that ice.
One thing I would like to see put in place at Mallard would be a min length limit on the crappie. I see a lot of folks with fish in their buckets that I can't see how they even Eatn em. Guess they eat em like sardines, lol. But, all in all, things will improve. It just takes time.
Hey Mojorig, who took over our district and are they a member of c.c forum.
The new supervisor's name is Brett Timmons. He is a great guy and biologist. I have passed this tread on to him to make him aware of this post and this site.
I agree with a length limit and also a 20 fish limit.
Thanks mojorig. As always you're very helpful when it comes to our area.I'm glad we have someone like you on the site. Thanks again
