Blue throw that dam thing away and buy you a new reel with line already on it....... I am the Truman problem solver......
us 2 do that but social security kick in have to make do
If your having trouble,,put the line on the reel,,go to the lake,,,let it all out and drag slowly getting it straight and all the kinks out including line twists,,and slowly reel in after dragging a few minutes, and your good to go. Try that.
Looking at the spool you want the line to unwrap in a counter-clockwise rotation. Another way to tell is to lay the spool flat on the floor with the label up. Put the line through the guides and tie it to spool. Reel about 15 rotations and drop the rod tip towards the spool on the floor. If the line starts to kink/coil up flip it over to the label down and do another 15-20 rotations and drop tip down again to see if it quits coiling. Which it should but some line has enough memory that it is tough to keep it from coiling up.
I have tried about everything also best for me is have significant other hold pencil with a slight tention on it as i reel line on spool. If I open bail and line coils out cut about 20 ft. off and go fishn. Another thing I have good luck with is once reel is full spray it with reel majic cast a few times with a heavy lure and then retie and go fish.

Reel Magic does wonders on mono line.
that line you buy for 2.00 a thousand has a long memory
Braid!
Cast it up in a tree. Get it snagged real good, then pull several times. If you're high enough in the tree, you'll have too much line out to break and you'll get a good stretch. A nice thin limb to give a lot of sway will help. Eventually, your fishing partner will want to change spots. Hold on to your pole as you motor away and she should break off. Hopefully not right by the reel.
Should be straight as a West Kansas highway after that.
You're welcome.
Keep in mind if the lure you're using rotates when you jerk it or reel in quick, it will be adding twists to the line. A lot of the jigs need to be hooked so they don't rotate when reeled in. I usually toss the lure out and reel quick to see if it rotates.
Braid also.
tryed jared way works greay lay spool on ground make sure it comes off counter clock wise fill all mine up ok
Glad it worked out for you Cliff. That is the way my grandfather always taught us grand kids to do it. It works for all reels including closed face and bait casters. Some need it coming off clockwise and others counter clockwise. So just give it a few reels and see if it twist or not. Flip it over if it does.
If reel turns clockwise make sure line comes of spool clockwise. If reel turns anti clockwise then come off spool anti clockwise. Works for me. If having a problem with a certain reel when in the boat and moving let line out with nothing tied on drive or a bit then reel back on.
The first thing you do is tell Keeferfish to "Hold my beer and watch this". Then you light a small stick of dynomite and hand it to Joedog and say, "You gonna fish or what!!!!" Works everytime!!!:fingerdance
For spinning I just go with the spool of line laying flat with the label up.
For baitcasters I have the spool rigged so it can rotate and have the line come off straight. I use a rifle cleaning rod stuck thru a milk crate and the spool of line.
We we use spin cast reels for the grand kids, they don't know when to quit reeling and twist the line up terrible. Letting it out behind the boat to untwist is the best way I've found, then just reel it back in and re tie.
