Have read several threads about folks using jigging poles to swing fish into the boat . I have never seen anybody swing anything but a dink into a boat . Do any of you do this ? If I think it's 12 inches or over , I net it .

I tend to net them all.. I got that tactic from my dad who would go crazy if one didn't get in the boat. Famous words when I was a kid... Get the NET!! Lol
If the pole will handle it I swing it in the boat period, I hate a net but it does cost me every now and then.
I take that the ones that viewed this and did not reply do not . Could be they thought it was dumb to even think of doing such a thing . I decided to ask because several folks have made comments about some rods being tough /others breaking . My grandpa used 80 lb. braid , solid fiberglass rod , and would swing one in the boat . He also bought hooks only if he was allowed to bend one to a 45 degree /and back . If it did not break he would buy a few as they were sold as singles . lol :biggrin
I have only used my net a couple of times......I bring the fish into the boat without it......have only lost a few fish doing this. I use sickle hooks and they are usually hooked solid in the roof of the mouth.
I net mine, but I ain't much of a pole fisherman. I ain't much of a fisherman anyway, but I like trying. :)
I think a real jigging pole needs a lot of bend to it . So unless it is a dink i pretty much net it . Lost to many trying to get them over the side of the boat . Caught 2 the other day that came off at the top off the water . Had the net waiting and manage to get them . It always seem that the goods ones get off .
Brm, you finally told the truth! !!!!! Lol
51 years old and never had a net in my boat. Lose some but I bet more people lose fish trying to get the net under it than just bringing it on over. I don't use under 10 lb test line either. If its a hoss, I'll just keep the line tight and lip it on the side of the boat. The poles going to keep the fish on if done the right way becaue the tip will be bending. Just don't grab the line to pull it over. Works for me anyway.
Its all part of the fun it you ask me. I don't need fish to eat. I have a whole freezer full. If I miss a few, then so be it. Never been to Lake Washington. Would like too because I love fishing Cypress trees. Bit of a drive from my house though. Had a trip planned last year the week it stormed like 7 straight days and canceled.
27458, me too, but gonna make the drive (weather permitting) next weekend. Hope they're in the cypress by then as it sounds, but if not.....bringin spider rigs any way, so it won't matter.
I net most all. Sat had a very good one come off just before I got her in the net but did get her.
I fish Truman lake mainly, dipping trees and brush piles. I use a 10 foot rod and 10 lb fireline. Been crappie fishing for 15-20 years and don't use a net and I have swung several 2 pounders in the boat. Weighed in a 3 pound crappie at Millwood, Arkansas during a tournament. She was only 5-6 feet down so by the time I set the hook and she's headed my way, I swung her in the boat. I have lost a few over the years, but not many. If they are hooked well, they are not going to fall off. I worry more about giving slack while waiting for the net. Have any of you lost fish trying to net them?
well of course we have . even hit a few with the net and lost them . If I get a good one the pole I use won't swing him in and i have to get it with my hand . Like right now I am fishing around 14 ' with a 12 ' pole . it ain't gonna happen . So guess it just depends on the person and what kind of equipment you have and get use too .
I use a net all the time. I have a net my grandfather made about 35 years ago on a modern frame on a push broom handle. There is no telling how many 3 pounders he netted with that thing.
The net has a couple of uses. When I wade, it is a redneck depth finder as well as a net. When I am in my 2 man boat it has been used as a paddle when my TM battery died, and I use it to scoop up my marker bouys. It was awkward at first, but now I hook them and fight with one hand and scoop them up in the net with the other. I bass fished for years and wanted to be a Bassmaster, and NEVER fished with a net back then, but now that I am "more refined" and crappie fish mostly, I would not go without a net.
The first couple of years I crappie fished, I did not use a net and it cost me. I had one on in the "Maude Willis fields" one day that rolled up to the top and looked like a dinner platter when she surfaced. I swear she had an eye that was big as a 50 cent piece. She promptly spit my jig at me and disappeared back to the iron wood brush top she came out of. I was sick about it. I think it was then that I decided to get my grandfathers net out and start using it.
If you wanna see a work of art, fish with Nimrod and watch him land good fish without a net.
I hate a net too--hardly ever use the net unless got someone with me and they want to use it.
Now in a tourny--try to use a net most of the time--but doesn't always work that way.
I am with 10footdown, I never use a net...... don't think I have lost a handful in 30 years, not worth having the thing in my way, I use the Ozark 10' rear seated rod and just keep tension on it when I hook the crappie and 10# power pro braid line and never had line break swinging a crappie in.... but like jigs vers. minnows it is your choice.... just like my rather fish for crappie than any other fish in the lake.......
Just face the facts. Some are more skilled than others! Some still need floaties to swim or training wheels on bikes, but it don't mean they aren't having a blast! :biggrin
this information tends to allow one to see why there are so many ideas about the best pole . Can see why the b/m Sam Heaton might be in question when flipping them in the boat .I'LL keep my Sam Heaton's and keep using a net .:biggrin
Swing them! These were caught yesterday on 12 foot rods, 12-14 foot down. They aren't Mississippi fish by no means, just good Truman Lake crappie. Gotta have a good rod with some back bone and some good line.

GREAT CATCH . 30 MPH. WIND HERE . WASHED AUTOS .:dono
I used to just lift them over the side but lost quite a few. Had a guy offer me a hand net a couple years ago at Butla cause he saw me lose 3 or 4 at the boat. Finally started nettin them ain't lost one since.Seems to me the shallower I catch them the more they want to tail walk right at the boat. Not so much spidering and catching fish deeper.Just my :twocents
I have one in the boat and like everyone, I have lost a dinnerplate at boatside. In my case it was before any decision could be made about whether or not to use the net. This particular one would have had me in the $. I first look at where the hook is in relation to the size of the fish. If I'm just fishin I hardly touch it except to retrieve a marker. There's always one in the boat.
Ya im a swinger! lol Never used a net, seems most get away as soon as they suface.
I net when rigging usually so as not to fight the other rods and I haven't perfected the swing with a 14' rod. Although I have become proficient in slapping anyone in the back seat with a fish when I try. But when I single pole I usually swing or lip the fish. But I also fish in a 17.5' stick steer and I single pole from the control seat versus the raised seats on the bow. So when I raise them up they come within an easy arms reach.
