They like clean deep, dark, cold water and they are great eating. The meat along the top of the back is favored.
Yall can keep them thangs up North!
Don't be such skeerdy cats!
Their wrapping fin is somewhat like our bowfin in these parts... and yes, they too pull like crazy and are a blast to catch.
yup they are a really fun fish to catch for sure last night was my biggest to hit the ice it was 35" and wow what a fight. they are considered a trash fish in a few lakes we have around here they are catch and kill and you can give them away or pitchem if you don't want them they are eating up all our smallmouth bass and trout.
When I first got to Vermont - fishing one of the Fish and Wildlife ponds caught a bullhead and a couple of older gents said nice eelpout!!! They also got a little ticked as they were'nt catching any big ones and my son and I were using Sonnys Super sticky channel stink bait.
Looks like an eel
:hesaid
Ugly gets my vote! :D
Never seen one of them before so I will call it whatever you name it.
well they are called burbot or freshwater lingcod. they don't have teeth like the lingcod you catch in Alaska and no teeth like a snake head. they are up to and some say they have caught some over 40" out of the lake I caught those out of here in Wyoming. they are great fighters but reproduce faster than rabbits and will destroy a trout and bass fishery in no time.
They look ugly but after you get one and really look at them they are pretty cool. My son when he was 5 yrs old he caught 2) 32" the first night out fishing for them by himself. he wanted it mounted so we got it mounted and its pretty cool and catching them on ultra light poles ice fishing at night and on 6lb test Pline its a great time
when I said we HAD a great smallmouth bass fishery it was great until someone illegally planted them in the lake. heres a 26 1/2" ling that had this 11" smallmouth bass swallowed whole. I could see the bass talk down in its throat when I went to take my jig out and so I got some plyers and pulled it out.

Well I just wish we had some more good ice to go thin out some more of them but its to rotten so we will just have to go and thin them out fishing out of the boat at night.
Poor Mans Lobster. Excellent table fare and once you get the skin off, they aint too ugly for the table.
Caught one at night walleye fishing in south Dakota. This kansas boy had never seen anything come swimming at me that looked like that!
Ya'll should catch yourself a freshwater eel. They are common in the Mississippi up in our area. Get one of those 3 foot suckers in the net, then thru the net and onto the boat floor and you'll be doing some dancing. An eel make a pout look like a prom date.
never caught an eel I will stick to the ling for me
Perch, I met a young man back in Wyoming elk hunting last fall who fishes the ling tourney on Flaming Gorge. He'd placed 2nd two years in a row. I sent him some jigs and a bunch of light sticks to try. Sounds like fun.
Yup they are a lot of fun. I haven't fished the ling tourneys as It always falls on the days I have to work and we are fishing a lake called fontenelle catching these big ling. they are a lot bigger than most of the ones at the gorge but the gorge you will catch a lot more per trip usually.
I was with my dad at the gorge and was the first one to catch a ling and turn it into the game and fish. I would have to look back in my pictures it was probably 8yrs ago.
How did you do on your elk hunt and where were you hunting? close to what town?
I stayed just above Fontonelle in La Barge. I hunted in unit 102 in November for cows. Was into elk but had some physical trouble and came home without one. Trying unit 7 this year in November or December. I really like your state. The young guy who fishes the tourney is the son of the motel owner in La Barge.
I guarantee that those who turned their nose up at those fish. Would change their mind if they ate one. They are absolutely delicious. My dad was a die hard " eel pout " fisherman. Not having a boat he was limited to extremely early spring fishing at night and extremely late fall fishing also at night.
These were about the only times they were available to our portion of the country. Here they are only available at Lake Erie. Now picture a man driving 70 miles to sit on freezing rocks all night. Remember back in the 40 and 50 s they did not have the cold weather gear they have today. If my memory is still sound four or five is the most he ever caught on one trip. I never asked to go on one of these trips. Much as I liked to fish this looked like a great chance to get close to freezing to death.
Ugly countenance doesn't equal poor table fare. IF it did no one would have ever tried to eat a snapping turtle. Now I know you southern fellas jump all over them as do I.Believe it or not some people think frog legs is disgusting. First time I ordered frog legs with my wife you should have seen the look on her face.
Some people grow up rich ( like my wife ) and some grow up middle class and some grow up poor. As my Dad used to say we grew up " PO ". Which meant we couldn't afford the extra o and r. Dad learned to cook in order to survive. Never used a recipe so it always tasted different no matter how made times he made it. That was any dish not just eel pout. I have never eaten " homefries " that could even slightly compare favorably with his. His sandwiches were legendary. When night fishing with relatives they always offered to pay for everything else if dad would pack the lunch for everyone.
Only downside for me. If he loved it you as his only son " just had to love it too." Most of the time this held true. The biggest exceptions was Chef Boy-R Dees chop suey meal which gagged me. Even worse was the oyster stew. Soon as I learned he was making one of those meals. All of a sudden I would get invited over to a friends house. I went someplace wether the invitation was real or not.
I'd like to have one in an aquarium . Folks around here don't get out much . I'd have them believing It was prehistoric .
yup a lot of guys around here love to eat them so I catchem and they eat them as im one of those kind of strange fishermen I don't eat fish but love to fish and like to have some hanging on my wall. Heres my son after celebrating with a big candy bar he got his picture taken with his 32" ling/ burbot he caught all by himself and wanted to have it mounted

I don't blame you for not going in the super cold back in the day with your dad. its cold out there we used to sit on buckets and lawn chairs while out ice fishing at -30+ degrees air temps just to ice fish now we have ice shacks nice comphy chairs and ice shacks with heaters.
We used to catch them while jigging lake trout in 80 feet of water. I learned later that they were called eel pout. We knew em as burbot, but also "lawyers". They called em that because they were bottom feeders! Not that all lawyers are that, but you get the idea
yup the one lake we fish mostly for lake trout has a lot of them in it to and we catch a lot fishing for lake trout. the other lake is rainbows, browns and cutthroat trout. Some kokniee salmon, a few smallmouth bass and some white fish.
They sure have a lot of names Lawyers is pretty nice compared to what a lot of guys around here call them that don't like them.
"They sure have a lot of names Lawyers is pretty nice compared to what a lot of guys around here call them that don't like them"....per Perch
LOL. I think that is a wide-spread thing.
