That little ditty is actually more about barometric pressure changes, than it is about "wind". It's the direction of the wind that signals where the High/Low pressure cells are, in relation to your area. It probably does have an effect on the quality of fishing, but as I've caught fish with winds blowing from all four directions ... I don't necessarily take it as a prime factor in whether to go or not. But, I can always use it as an "excuse" for not catching anything during a East or North wind, and doing good during a West or South wind :Rofl
... cp :kewl
Wasn't true yesterday. Winds were east and we were catching nice fish on Grenada. Wind shifts to west and they all but shut down.
:hesaid
You got it wrong...Wind from the east they bite like a beast. Fish bite everyday. Doesn't make any difference about wind, barometric pressure, water color, moon phase, or anything else. We all have our fishing "ruts" we get into and we have our favorite places and our favorite rigs and tend to stay within our own "fishing comfort zone". When conditions change and our normal fishing method/location doesn't work, we tend to blame it on something, when actually all that happened is that we were a sorry fisherman on that day. Crappie cannot go to the corner grocery and get their food, neither can they predict when they get their next meal. When they do find that next meal they will eat and eat and eat until they are completely gorged and they will still hit your "bait". I cannot emphasize how important it is to be versatile. Don't be afraid to change or do something completely different than you normally do. Knowing your water is extremely important and it goes much further than knowing that favorite honey hole that someone showed you back in the day. The key to catching is the crappie nose. You find that crappies nose and hang a bait in front of it presented in the manner he is looking for, and he will hit it every time. Good luck catching...everyday.
Must be a Tennessee thing, Ha
Maybe that's just Mississippi! :biggrin
My PB Walleye 14#4oz was caught on a day where wind was blowing from every direction and rain was usually parallel to lake surface. I admit, I should have packed it in before the weather turned but fish were biting like they knew it was their last meal for a week. Finally caught something big, figured it was a sheepshead but did not feel like breaking off my last silver/orange jigging spoon. Took 20 minutes to get the fish and holy cow GET THE NET! Saw that flash of white and knew it was a big eye. During that time, boat did about 3 360's from wind change quite a trip and quite a ride.
South end of Lake Michigan, Perch fishing. If the wind switches to the east it's like you flipped a switch.
don't you just love a Mystery
Fish every chance you get and don't worry about the ol' saying. They will eat sometime during the day.
Luck is a man made set of circumstances. the more you go, the luckier you get!
Haven't ever checked on that one. I have seen folks that swore that the one about the cows standing or laying down to be true. Once new a guide that said if he knew that his client was a believer in the solunar tables in the hunting mags he would take them where he knew they would not catch fish when the table said they should and would take them where he knew they would catch something when the table said they would not be biting. A hook thats not in the water will not catch fish regardless of all factors we can think of.
My philosophy is NEVER SAY THEY AIN'T BITING , most days if you hang in there long enough most days you will be rewarded. You must keep hunting and using your electronics along with your fishing sense . :twocents :fish
Hey nimble I always believe just don't say the "wind" word while fishing cause it will sure enough blow then lol.
My saying goes, tons of sun, no wind no rain no fish!
Winds out of the north......... Don't go forth!
Don't believe wise tales! You may have to change your presentation or pattern, but you can catch everyday that you can stand to be on the water. As said before changes tactics, areas and be patient. Fish do get lethargic, with pressure changes. Though, if you put the right bait in a crappies face long enough he will bite. It's like sweets on holidays, we are usually so full from the main course that we can not move, but if someone brings you a piece of pie or cake your hooked!
I so have to agree with the above statement. Let me ask yall this, today was a very nasty day, not so much in he wee morning ours. But, yall i smoked them today! Loved it! Typically i would of just stayed home, but i was like man its my day off! Im going after these buggers! Gys, thee was not a soul on the lake, just me. Rain coming down, wind from the north, and yes they were on fire!
Now ll have to admit, i had to hang it up around noon, cause i couldn't use my hands anymore, not a good feeling. But, tomorrow is suppose to be shaping up some good really gooding fishing conditions, at least for the fishermen. I kind of takes the fun out of it, when you cant even push your jig back up your hook! Lol.... But, tomorrow, ( which will be Sun, for who is ever reading this on a later date) is going to be warmer, light winds, partly cloudy, but with the night will have tonight, with temps faling back to the upper 20's, im sure it will pt a damper on things for Sunday. What yall think?
I go by the rule if I'm not workin I'm fishin.
If you listen to the weatherman you will miss a lot of good fishing days.
Go out when ever you can and enjoy it to the fullest !!!!! STEVE
I've caught them with winds from every direction but admit, I struggle at times with winds from the east. RCC probably has it right, not adjusting is probably why you don't catch them. I like to cast but when things get tough, it's time to hang one right in front of a crappie's nose.
my grandpa taught me that saying and i thought it to be etched in stone till i got older. i just look for the banks the wind is gonna blow the shad and other bait fish on. that usually works for me knock on wood!!! theres one exception for me and dont know why but i fish a flat on the big sac just to the west of CC highway bridge on stockton lake,mo and if the winds blowing up the river or straight out of the south i do fine but for some reason when it starts shifting to the east and is blowing under the bridge i just pack it up and go home cause most the time the bite shuts down. ive never heard the explantion crappiepappy gave about barometric pressure but it makes sense and would explain my delema at CC bridge.
I go when ever I can, but it's definitely much slower
when the wind is out of the north.
Any pro will tell you a cold front shuts them down.
some can still be caught, but it's much harder and slower.
Remember he was not asking weather you should go or not,but was the statement was true, yes go when you can, because you can get some to bite but most os the fish shut down after certain conditions, usually a east wind do not come often which makes shad relocate which will take time and fish must relocate also ,most will shut down until better condition, and a fish do not have to eat every day,he will get dominate under certain condition, but yes some even then can be caught but they are few and far apart, many times you can coach a few of them to bite, but by no means just because fish are there does it mean you are going to catch them, the si and di has prove that to be true for many of us when we could see hundreds and would not hit anything,oh i know if you had been there ,friend i am talking about many of us that i would put in a class as a real good fishermen, but the fish were not bitting ,sometimes you could get a couple.a west wind and a south wind are common,a change wind to another direction usually shuts them down for a while, not always, but a consistant direction helps,as far as blowing in all direction,it is not coming from all direction but is hitting the bank or trees and then going back another direction,if you think not go in the big open water and see all waves still going one way, crappiepappy had much truth in his statement, but i don't think he meant that it was set in stone ,only a general rule, yes i would go when i could but i know i will have to make changes and not expect as good of day as other days, yet in those days it do seam like that is when a few really big fish bitr
Best crappie day I ever had was freezing cold NE wind, caught Crappie after Crappie... GrandLake, OKLA...
wind was out of the southeast almost every time I fished sardis and usually did good.
