I ordered a 7ft rod from Bonehead and am now on the mission of finding the right reel. What go you guys using this rod prefer? Really don't care to try 4-5 reels before I find that balance.

I only use two reels, its either a Bass Pro Shops Extreme Spinning reel that costs $60.00 or I use the Pflueger President 6925. Love both of them.

I prefer a small, light reel because it won't be holding much line. I use the Bass Pro Crappie Maxx. $19.99. :)
I have both and like both. I would take the rod to BassPro and hang a reel on it to check for balance. I like the Extreme because of the large spool for casting. Especially with light line. Feel both are very good quality reels.
I only use Shimano Reels for the last 15 yrs. I can honestly say I have never used either of the mentioned reels. Yesterday I traded a broken down reel at BP for a CarbonLite Extreme. It will be the first non Shimano used for like ever. I am a cast n dragger first and foremost so I like the Shimano reels with triggers like the spirex to eliminate unneeded moves. The jury is still out on the CarbonLite since I haven't used it yet......Ranger
Mark, would like to hear how it works for you. I went thru two this winter and both got returned. when it is realy cold, the reel stiffens up to where you have to add force to reel it and it wont be smooth. Both reels did it and the guy at Bass Pro returns counter said they had seen several returned for that reason. Something to do with the grease in the real getting cold and making it get stiff. he advised me I could try to remove the grease and spray with Silicone but returning them was just a lot easier. Let me know if you have that problem at all
Dang it I had a gut feeling I was messing up not sticking with a Shimano. Best Drag System I have ever found on a spinning reel. My Luck.......Ranger
Shimano 2500FE or Pflueger President 6925/6930. The smoother of the two is the Shimano by a hair. Never had a problem with either of them.
I got a 2500f recently kinda pricey but a awesome reel
Never had one, but always hear good things about the presidents.
Nope Notta Never have 9. I is usually just wear em plum out and send em back to repair center in Sunny Cali and have them totally repaired for $19. Spirex and Scynopate are the models I have. For the price the Scynopate is hard to beat.....Ranger
Josh (Swollencrappie) I set that new Carbon Lite outside on the ice for 3hrs and the picked it up and casted it several times and was as smooth as a babies butt. Don't know if they got the message from all the returns or not but this one works fine after laying on the ice in the shade for 3 hrs.........Ranger
Glad yours works. Mine sure didnt, they were awesome in the store and even at home inside when I put line on them and then went to fish the next morning and holy cow, it was a different reel.
Swollen, try a tennesee handle rod sometime. You can move the reel wherever you want and balance almost any reel out no matter which model.
I have a president 6925 on one of those rods, it's perfect for me.
A lot of insight here. thanks guys! The way I see it, I have like 10 chances to get it right!:Rofl I think I know which way im going now! again thanks fellas
If your going to your folks this weekend holler at me and you can try my bonehead/president out Pappa .
Thanks Redge but I gots to cut a tree up this weekend, a BIG one. If anybody needs some hardwood to sink let me know. I can store it for a little while but at some point it will become a fire hazard. Let me know.
I have always like Brownings but it has been years since I have bought a new reel.

Papa,
I have been using a President 6925 and just traded in an old reel last night for a President 6920 bc I liked the 1st one so much for the price. I have also used Shimano Sedona 500's. The Shimano's probably have a better drag system but not as many bearings, although they are very smooth for a 5 bearing reel. The President's have 7 to 10 bearings depending on the model. For the longer rod you will want to go up at least one size. Probably a 6925 or 6930 in the Pfleuger or the 1000 models of the Shimano.
No it's in California. Look online for repair and service. For a weak spring I would check with your local Yellow pages there are several local repair shops around that can do that without sending it off. BP can also help with finding shops for you
Cool. Thank you. I didn't think there was anyone local (Tulsa area) any more since Okie Bait & Tackle closed.
Thought I would throw out a very small, high quality, inexpensive spinning reel for those that like the little ones. I saw many on the Texas Fishing forum, Crappie section raving about the Pinnacle Tiny Deadbolt last year so I bought one. I haven't used it much yet Crappie fishing but have for some smaller stuff. It seems to be very well made and certainly fits the 'inexpensive' category. I would chose it over one of the small Crappie dedicated inexpensive reels.

I've only used it with Viscious panfish so far but I'm going to load some Bonehead on it and put it on an old 6' All Star light action I have.
Thanks Floyd, I'll have a look!
Yeah I've heard talk of that reel. It's a lot like the Crappie Maxx I spoke of earlier that I use.

I ordered a Bonehead 7' rod late on the evening of the 6th. It came in today and appears to be excellent quality. I'll load it up with a President 6925 and bonehead braid tomorrow but I probably won't get a chance to try it out for a few days. I hadn't been able to reach Josh but had heard excellent reports on the Texas Fishing Forum about Angler's Pro Tackle in North Richland Hills. I went to their web site and they showed them in stock - $99.99 shipped. They had excellent communication and quick shipping. It would have been here a day sooner but for the weekend.
I have to admit I was reluctant to order one because the handle seemed about 4-6" too long for my preferences in a 7' rod. Sure enough, it feels too long to me. I don't need the handle of a 7' rod to come back to my elbow, which it does. That's where my 9 and 10' rods come to and I like them there. My favorite rod has been a 6'9" Falcon BuCoo light action. When comparing the two the longer handle on the Bonehead actually makes the rod an inch shorter than the Falcon. I couldn't tell the difference in weight although I'm sure there is some. I'm not trying to disparage the Bonehead as it looks to be a superb rod. I'll probably get used to the long handle and I'll have braid on it exclusively. I only use Viscious on my BuCoo. They will be side by side the next time I get the boat out (and maybe on a pond before then.) I'm really anxious to try it out (long handle or not.)
I also got a Lil Bit lanyard in the mail today from Arkansas - neat tool!
Your going to love that Bonehead Rod Ikeni!! Guaranteed! I am anxiously awaiting his 10' or longer jigging pole!!

Ike....if the 7" handle is too long trim it to fit your preference. It wont affect the action one bit.
Oh I know it won't affect the action but would most probably affect the balance which is very good. I weighed it and my Falcon today and the Falcon is actually a few grams lighter. The Boneheads great balance is what makes it feel lighter. The handle is actually more than 7" anyway - it begins well behind the reel seat. And, I'm not one to start chopping on a $100 rod. I'm sure I'll get accustomed to the longer handle and it will become a favorite rod. The quality is excellent!. It will be awhile before I get to use it. I've got an electronics project going on right now.
