I bought three solos and really like them. Much better quality than the plastic ones I have been using. However I am having one issue and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. The line slips between the split on the bottom of the reel, where the two sides join. This happens two or three times a trip. It is not hard to fix, just loosen the side nut and pull the line back through.
Has anyone figured the cause of this, and devised a fix? Other than this, I love the reels. Thanks.
Useing Bonehead braid on mine and no problems
Using 4 lb vicious and I haven't had problems either. Maybe look for a small crack or something allowing it to do this. Line can do some crazy things that seem impossible but theres always a reason just do some close inspection
I use 10# test. If 4# or braid is not slipping through on ya'll, then there is definitely something different about mine. I have really only used one of my three enough to judge. Maybe the others are fine, still enjoying the reel. Thanks
show us a pic of your set up...may have the reel backwards. Not implying you are stupid...I did it myself.
Can u explain that a little better. I just got 2 and haven't used them yet. The handle is on the left side correct? I thought I read some where that it was reversible. Mine is not. The line is suppose to come off the bottom of the spool ,correct?Quote:

No! Its not supposed to come off the bottom, that creates a huge angle in the line that gets hung on everything. It MUST come off the top of the reel and be straight in line with your eyes. That is the problem. Fix that and the issue goes away.
If you make it come off the top you have to wind backwards to get line in.
That angle allows you to hold the line in your finger. At least that's the way I run mine anyways and it works great I can feel everything that way
I just got off the phone with Rick Klunn from LEWs and he said it was designed to come off the bottom of the spool. I also watched a video on U tube that showed the same thing.

And a right handed Solo reel the handle is on the left side just like a right handed spinning reel. You can take it apart and turn a piece around and then turn the reel around and make it left handed. But I like mine like it is...hold the pole and jig with right hand and wind with left hand. Satdoc is right about the reels he has pictured but those are not Solos.
Thanks for making that call and clearing that up Wilbur. I've heard elsewhere I've been using mine wrong but I liked the way it was working for me and now I know that it's because I'm using it the intended way
Maybe I am confusing this reel with the Mr Crappie reel that just basically holds your line. Isnt that one the solo?
I fish left handed, therefore need my reel handle on the right side. I thought I followed the instructions correctly when putting my handle on the right side. However, now when I reel forward, taking in line, the line rolls in from the bottom. Apparently I have done something wrong. I guess tomorrow I will take all the line off and try to start over.
I definitely see how coming off the top would solve my problem, but don't see how I can make that happen with the handle on the right side. I'm sure there is a way.

I suppose you could do either way. but if line comes off the top you will have to reel backwards no matter what side the handle is on. If someone would see you doing that they would think you were retarded.
I see a good many folks with the little plastic BnM jig pole reels like that reeling backwards.........myself, the line comeing off the bottom does not bother me, it makes it easier to pitch with if you want to pitch to a tree and I sometimes have that line in my hand when the bite is real lite....helps to feel it.Quote:

no....its not.
if someone saw you trying to reel in a fish with this reel, they may think you were retarded. But you only reel in the line ONCE, at the END of the day. Who cares if you reel it backwards?
BUT, you can take the reel apart and swap the handle and you wont have to be retarded if you don't want to. I will take a pic of mine tonight and post it.
Once you have it come out the top...in line with your eyes, you will NEVER want a 4" gap between your line and your reel again to get caught on everything again.
and, BTW, to answer his original question, that will also solve the very problem you asked about.

Wilbur is correct, if you wan' the line to come off the top you'll have to reel backwards. I have mine set up that way, no big deal.
Instructions come with the reel to change the direction of the handle. The reels have a one way bearing that works like a sprag in an auto transmission. You have to pull the bearing out and turn it half over and reinstall it. It doesn't come out easy, IMO it's best to pull the cage and rollers out first (be careful and don't lose any of the rollers) then pull the race. You will have to put the cage and rollers back in the outer race before reinstalling. A little grease will help hold the rollers in place. I used a seal pick to pull mine.
