Depends on your setup. What battery and boat do you have?
36 volt system with agm batteries will do best.
Have a 17 ft bass tracker with 43 lb thrust trolling motor. Size 27 battery?
I have a Targa 185 dc with a terrova 24 volt, have 2 29 series batteries, can do 8 hrs at 1.5 with no problems. Always charge your batteries as soon as possible after fishing
one battery wont cut it, either go to a 24 80lb or get another battery and hookup parrell to give you longer running time
Could troll all day long with a Walmart group 27 and 55 terrova on a 542 war eagle loaded heavy. Haven't pulled cranks but once with the new boat. The 55 on one battery ran fine for 3 hours or so on the Excel 1860, but I don't think it would have run all day. Looking forward to pulling cranks with the 80/24v motor and seeing how it does.
I use CART batts and am a firm belieder in them, with that said they dont fit every application. Weight is relative to batts lasting, a 50 pound batt aint donna hang in there near as good as same the 90 pounders I have in the Cat. If wieght is a issue get a couple of 31s and try them paralell and then if you decide to wich to 24v down the road its a simple wire swat to be going. Dont just add a new batt to your old one, old one will pull the new one down to where it is. Good luck
To get any real life out of batteries pulling cranks you need a motor with the Maximizer variable speed. A 5 speed motor draws to much juice to be really effective for pulling even with 2 batteries for any length of time.
just my :twocents 43 lb thrust isnt enough to pull that boat cranking, to get that speed out of it your probably running wide open and that is going to suck down fast no matter how good your battery is
i run 2 24 volt setups in my boat(group27 batteries)dead batteries can ruin a good day of catching.also run big motor with a trolling plate when its windy and steer with trolling motor, seems like u have better boat control with both in windy conditions
my big motor i use to troll with i always run seafoam in it and rev it in neutral every hour or so and it does fine
I am getting a group 4 battery with 1084cca,,,should last all day no problem.
The largest Optima Bluetop is 900CCA, but CCA is only a concern for starting batteries. The thing to look for in trolling batteries is Reserve Capacity or RC. Optimas are extremely small capacity batteries, with the largest Bluetop, the D31M only having 155 minutes RC compared to 205-210 minutes in almost every other 29/31 sized battery made. Almost every battery made, AGM or conventional flooded cell is a better choice than an Optima for trolling. You can beat Optima specs for trolling with a $75 Group 27 battery.
AGMs always have less capacity than a flooded cell of the same weight. They are inherently less efficient by nature. An Everstart 29 has 205 minute RC and weights 61 lbs. A Diehard PM-1 AGM has 205 minute RC and weighs 75 lbs.
They are rated 1050cca@70 degree.I never said i trolled with them...they are used to power my 604 ci Mustang drag car...just impressed with how they have held up.You will replace that 29 Neverstart 3 to 1 over the AGM Diehard if you take good care of it...let it set over winter and sulfate.the ratio goes up even more.
I recommended agm to the thread stater because of durability. My optimas have been used and abused but show no sign of given up.My boat has 2 lead acid 29hd interstates for the tm and 1 agm 31 diehard for everything else.
I have to agree with RT on this. I have 2 24 series agm's on board that are 7 years old and still going strong. I also have 2 bigger Wally World batteries, they work, but the longest they've lasted is 4 years. If you could afford them, I'd definitely use them!
I believe he wants to know best battery for pulling crankbaits, what will have the longest run time for one day ,if u have never pulled crankbaits u wouldnt u understand.i run two seperate 24 volt setups so i can make it a full day no problems, pulling at 2mph for hours straight is hard on.batteries and wireing, i even melted some quick disconnects together one time.when u pull cranks ur not worried about how many years u can get out of a battery, ur just worried about how much runtime u can get in a day.
My bad! :-)
Quit worring bout batteries and put on a Kicker Motor. Run it and steer with the trolling motor on low. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!
