hey tiptop what kind of pump you have their
Nice! I see some sort of air line going in there as well as the filtration pump going. Tell us more! I have an old claw foot tub with a pond pump going with the suction line below a one gallon bucket filled with lava rock and filter material. I try to keep Koi in there, but when they get to a certain large size, the owls steal them. Something like that would work as long as I can keep my labs out of there :) Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting! Shiners rule.
The air pump and charcoal filter came from a aquarium and I had a 30 gal. drum I cut down to 12 gal.
thanks I might make one
Thanks for posting tiptop and welcome aboard. Will you have to feed them something like goldfish food if you have them for an extended period of time? ~~<*{{{{<<
I keep my own minnows as well in a 100 gallon tank. I recommend not feeding them. This causing them to put off more ammonia which removes oxygen out of the water; which will kill them quick. You'll know there's too much ammonia in the water if you see a light foam on the surface. Keep the water clean and they'll live a long time. Change water out 2x's a week.
Thanks for posting tiptop. That's a nice setup you have there. In certain times of spring I fish minnows and so does about everyone else around here. So when u want em you can't find em....unless u have them stashed at home.
Waxenslabs, that's some good info. I've tried to feed them and just didn't know what to do. From now on my shiner stash is on a fast.
Thanks for the positive feedback. I have been feeding them goldfish food. Thanks for the info on the ammonia I didn't think of that, looks like they are going on a diet.
Dad had a cinder block frame with a swimming pool liner in it, then a box above with a small pump pulling water from the bottom and into the box to flow back in. Worked like a charm. If I ever get to fish often enough, I may have to rig something like this up, but as it is, I suspect I'd be buying fish to feed the worms most of the time....
Yeah a stressed golden shiner won't live long so there's really a fine line of how long you want to try to keep them. Stress = ammonia. The more water you can get in a tank the better if you plan on keeping them a while. With more water it takes more time for a saturation of ammonia from either feeding them bc you've had them so long, or not feeding them bc you've had them so long. As stated before not feeding them is better. 9/10 times you'll use em up before it's ever a problem. However I've bought so many at a time before that regular water changing and plenty of filters kept the water clean enough that they lived for 2 months. May check on ordering some Black Salty's from Anderson Farms in Arkansas. They will FEDEX them to your door in an oxygen bag inside a box. The deal with them is you can't hardly kill them. Very Stealthy. They're girthy, but so is what a crappie eats. A little expensive, but if you aren't throwing dying minnows out, in the long run it's a wash. Also hydrogen peroxide removes chlorine out of the water. Way cheaper than pet store products. Only need a cap full per 25 gallons.
I use a lot of minnows so I use a 100 gallon tank with about 80 gallons of water. Holds 5-6lbs of shiners well. Click picture for video:

Wax, you must not have little boys runnin round your house.. My son would stress all those minners to death in a day or so, not only does he poke crappie in the eye HE'S GONNA CATCH every minner in the bucket TEN TIMES before the day is out nonono
Not yet, but do have a 2 month old daughter who's Momma is an RN and likes anything that has to do with eyeballs or skinning deer/fish to see their organs. Weird I know..so yeah monkey see monkey do. It won't be long for me. I'll have to engineer a door on top with a lock on it.
Have you thought about aquaponics. It would be a good way to keep shiners and get a little produce too
This is pretty neat. The fish waste fertilizes the plants. The soil filters the water and provides nutrients for the fish.
