How do you determine what color and type of jig to use?
Think every one has their go to jig colors but most are pretty basic, Black and Chartruse, pink and Chartruse, Blue/Chart, Orange/Chart. Those would get you started. Then use the darker colors on dark days and lighter colors on bright days. From there you kinda let the fish dictate what you do. I'm kinda partial to a purple/chart and a Bright green head,Lime body with Char tails.
Cold weather I like Hair and around 65 or so go to plastics but they will both work. Don't know if I answered your question or not.
Water color has a lot to do with it if you're fishing blind on a new body of water. I've got some colors that I just g to on certain bodies of water.
"SPANKY" don't care what color the water is just throw him in and ask and you shall receive! !!!
In muddier water water you'll want bright colors... In clear water bright colors can work well if there's an overcast, on sunny days in clear water I like to use "shad" colors...
I use a different color on every pole and change frequently!
Confidence in what you use and presentation more important to me. I favor big tubes like Southern Pro Umbrellas and heavier lead heads as I only vertical jig fish.
Hand ties like MEATGETTER's Spanky sink faster than plastics and help when fishing cold deeper waters.
I favor darker colors with Chartreuse for stained to muddy. More colored waters darker and brighter colored baits. Clear more light and natural colors for me.
I don't carry a huge arsenal of bait styles and colors like most. I try to keep a few dark colors with chartreuse (purple, green, black with metal flake) for stained water. Light colors (silver metal flake , pink, light purple , blue with white) for clear. Always carry a few bright colors in hand tied like Spanky for fishing deep or badly colored water. Overcast days even in clear water try darker baits.
All said my go to baits are Purple metal flake with Chartreuse tubes or Bright colored Spanky. I love baits with Metal flake even more on sunny days.
I am not a be believer in lots of colors but light / dark / bright colors. Most folks are shocked to see how few baits I carry. Confidence in your fishing , presentation, and most of all location, can't catch em if they ain't there.:twocents
