Just bought some spyder lok holders . I am looking to purchase 12 or 14 foot rods, my question is which rods under 60 $ do you guys prefer and where is a good place to order these? I am planning on spider rigging and long lining, and possibly pulling cranks. Thanks for any advice.
I use ozark rods, but I wouldn't waste my time on the 12's ( you will go longer sooner than later). I went from 14's to 16's last year

14 ft southern crappie rods is what i would go with.
We just went from 12's to 14 ft BGJP's. The further you can get from TM, the better, but I don't trust myself with a 16' pole. Grizzly Jig has a 3 pole discount all the time I think.
Don't mean to hijack thread but what all pros are there to the longer poles, I guess my question is why is it better to be further out from boat?

Larger spread, gets the bait out further from the boat and trolling motor.

14`s farther away from boat the better in shallow water, fish don`t spook as bad. Gives more separation for lines.
14ft BnM Prostaff Trolling Rods, Monks crappie has great prices on these. This rod will do it all.

Irvin, the boat creates a pressure and shadow and noise. Getting the baits to them before all that happens is best, so the longer the better. 14' seems to be popular. Douglas lake in East Tennessee has folks pushing cranks a lot and that means adding 1 to 6 ounces of weight, and there are a few folks over there using 20' rods but that's the extreme and they were bought on clearance. This allows the baits to travel the proper speed and stay out of trouble. It takes a lot of rods out of the picture as they won't handle the extra weight. I know a little about BnM and nothing about the Ozark rods folks speak of. In the BnM the pro series troller(PST) will do everything but are a bit stiffer. I use the Bucks Graphite Jig pole (BGJP) to spider rig, longline jigs and cranks and about everything else except push cranks as they won't take the weight. Good luck, lots to choose from......Skeet.
Do the southern crappie rods come in 2 or 3 pieces? It doesn't specify on their website.

I love the 16ft b&m capps and coleman trolling rods for spider rigging. The bucks graphite jig poles are great also but a little too limber for my taste in a spider rig
I have heard very good things about the Southern Crappie Rods but have yet to use them. I have owned PSTs, Capps and Colemans and now Ozarks. All rods are good options but I prefer Ozarks because they have a light tip but still have plenty of backbone. The PSTs are a little to stiff and the C an Cs to limber for my taste.

I know this is a stupid question, but what exactly is Long Lining. Up here in Illinois people mostly, almost only jig fish or bobber/minnow. I got to do some spider rigging on a trip to Mississippi last year and I know about pulling cranks. But I don't know what long lining is.....?????
Long Lining is basically "trolling", generally with jigs, where your lines are running well back of the boat.Quote:

Ive been adding up the cost of setting up Spider rigging on my newer boat, and its adding up to around $500 and thats starting with 4- 14ft poles and -$25 spinning reels, the poles that seemed to be priced right and have a flourecent orange tips (for guys who refuse to wear glasses) are Hi-Tec's Panfish rods sold by Gizzley jig company, they have good prices on most everything although they dont care Cumberland crappie's 360 T bars which I am leaning toward.
on the spider rigging, is it betterr to run all jigs, or mixture of different types. This site is aweosme. learning so much
If you run a mixture of plain jigs, jigs tipped with minnows and various depths, until you "find" the fish. You will know where in the water column the fish are and what they are "feeding" onQuote:

Couple of places to look for good cheap reels. For spider rigging I recommend bait casters, Longlining might want spinning reels. They are cheap enough on theses sites to have a set of each.
What size weight will the southern crappie rods carry? ???
I am favoring the B&M since they are the one that is most available where I am at.
Jerry, Sat at the fruit jar at Washington I was running 1 oz on two poles and it was fine. That's the most I've had on mine but think they would handle more pretty well.
