I rode over the bridge on Red Mill Rd and got chills thinking about the Run this year.
I say this every year "if you have never fished the river in the spring for White Bass you are missing out"
I usually start fishing the last week in Feb. Should be able to find a few here and there till mid March then its on till the end of April.

Red, the water looks good. Not muddy at all and the level looks to be pretty much normal. I hope the water level stays like it is now. If it does then the creeks are going to hold some good fish this year.
Jim, You know how much I love to catch a White Bass on my ultra light. They pull like a train. LOL I will let you know when its worth the drive. We can meet at the HOLE!!!

I feel so sorry for you guys!! I've already caught over 3 dozen white bass this yr, several huge ones! I don;t wait for them to come to me, I go to them!!LOL!!(Hyco Lake)
LOL Thanks for rubbing it in Doc.. Any way I could get to any of those white bass from the bank? I am only about 15min from Hyco.

You said a mouth full with that statement. It is trout fishing on steroids. I actually put the waders on, in order to get close and personal with the fish.
Never have found a place where you could fish for them like this. As a teenager used to fish the rivers coming into Lake Lure, but water was to deep to wade like we do here. I also encourage people to try fishing the white bass run it will HOOK you(pun intended).
Like, there ain't no white bass in Hyco, Keith's just pullin y'alls legs.

buzzbait, you can catch them at times from the bank aroun the 3 bridges that cross the lake under hwy 57. sometimes it shoulder to shoulder there tho. I do best usin my world famous 3 way rig trollin.

I got that same craving going on right now except for shad catching vs white perch catching. There should be some hickory shad starting to show any day with American shad not far behind.
Keep us posted. I would like to try for a few shad now that I have a boat.

Yeah I'm going to try and do some shad fishing too this season. FYI- Bass Pro has a good sale starting Feb. 6! They have their brand of rooster tails on sale for .99 so stock up!Quote:

In years past, I've absolutely worn the White Bass out on little crankbaits (YoZuri Snap Shad) on the flats in the Eno down by where the power lines cross as the Whites are staging to run up towards Penny's Bend. Can't hardly keep a lure in the water. It's almost as much fun as a person can have with a fishing rod in hand.
Hybrids running shad up onto shallow points at Jordan and smashing tiny chrome Rattle Traps so much that they eat the paint off it in one day was probably the only thing for me that ever topped it, fishing-wise. Plus, every now & then a 6-8 pounder would jump in the mix. Talk about a fight on light tackle!
Of course, those White Bass in the Eno have current and know how to use it. Every day it gets closer.

Keep a watch on the Marine Fisheries site and watch the creel reports. They will start shocking and taking ramp counts once the shad show up in the rivers. I fish Battle Park and the discharge pipes down river from there. I also will travel with the boat and fish the Nuese around Pitch Kettle and also the Roanoke up to Weldon. I will make sure I keep you guys posted on info I here.... 2 nd week in March last year was prime for shad and Stripers in the same trip...

Caught a few really small males in the eno today
Liquid - If you watch the water temps on the USGS stream gage at the Westover/hwy 45 bridge near Plymouth and see it stays around 50 degrees it is a good time to go to Weldon.
