Ok all you old pros...what is the best wiring solution for my new 859HD DI?
My current small graph at bow was connected to trolling motor wires when I bought the boat. I have cranking battery and 2 trolling batteries.

if it's the only thing going on the wires, run 14 or 16ga wire from starting battery to the unit and you should be good to go.

Using twisted pair helps eliminate interference.

Take your 2 wires, make sure you have more than enough to reach from battery to hookup. Tie a over hand knot at on need leaving about 6-8 inches tag end. Hook it ove something to hold it then take your 2 wires and twist them together until you get to the other end. Don't have to be real tight. Put a piece of electrical tape close to the end to keep them together. Then make your wire run through the boat. Once you have that done and wires secured, put ends on to connect to battery. On finder end solder a blade type fuse holed into power wire then solder in red power wire from finder. Solder ground wires together. Make sure to use some heat shrink over connections. Once that is done connect to cranking battery. Twisting the wires in this manner stops a lot of external interference.
I use an cordless drill to twist them together. Be sure to start with plenty of wire because the more you twist the shorter the wire gets.
Thanks a bunch guys. I knew someone out there had a more tried and true method for me. As much as the units cost, I definitely want it to perform the way it is supposed to. I always worry that I am going to tear more stuff up than what I install.

I would make sure to put the fuse holder on the battery end so that it protects the boat’s battery if the cable gets shorted somewhere.
Not so, an 898 draws 750 mA. It only takes 200 mA or so to kill you.
??? That has nothing to do with the reason for a fuse. A fuse is matched to the wire so if there is a short on the wire the fuse will blow before the wire catches on fire and ruins your day. The size of the wire is matched to the equipment it feeds so it can carry the required amperage with less than 1 volt drop across the run.
Then I misread your comment about a fuse being there to save a person and not property.

You are correct that you size the wire to equipment but are wrong about the fuse sized to the wire. The fuse has to be sized to the equipment AND the wire.
I ran 14 gauge wire to a toggle for my depth finder, but I have a 3 amp in line fuse at the battery. If I'm reading what you are saying, then you are saying I should have used a 15 Amp fuse.
