Ask the experts
So guy I walk with everyday after work tells me, he was waitting for his wife to get out of the doc s office and two ladies doing a crossword puzzle asks him if he was military? He says yes I was in the army for a couple years. Gals ask him whats a 5 letter navy term for retreating? Dont know was army. So he asks me, tell him same thing dont know was army. Asked around the bus barn even the navy guys dont know so I said I can ask the experts they know everything that needs knowing. So any clever answers? All I came up with was 1 letter short SWIM.:banghead

never known a Sailor to run away, but I would guess, nope no guess.

I believe it is retire. Which also means withdraw in the military. Might be wrong but I think so.
-
That came to mind also but is 6 letters. I also thought of delay such as tactical delay or abort. No luck.
-
LOL I guess I should learn to read I totally missed the five letter part. Sorry :banghead:

How about dingy? I think there is an "H" in there somewhere but when the ship is sinking, who cares.

never-- see how that word works??

Wish I had the crossword puzzle to see what word does work? Thanks for all the suggestions well most of them. Guess it is one of those things I will keep wondering about.

So (navy school in Va.) says kcbrown is right (about) would be the correct answer. See we do have experts!!!

I was just going to say, you asked, you have the right answer, THE EXPERT has spoken. It is used in terms of turning the ship 180*. If such a move was made, you'd hear announced, "PREPARE TO COME ABOUT!!". It is not a gentle turning of the ship.
On the rescue/salvage ship I am a plank owner of, we'd list so far over you could stand on the bulkhead with both feet.

Well OK I thought giving you credit was good but without a co word about is useless. Unless you add turn about or come about or about face what do you have? If you gave a command of about where would it get you?

Just messing with you. The reference to "retreat" made me think of the urgency of "come about", with "about" being very exact in it's meaning of 180*. Retreat = go the other way.
