Regular flat waxed thread, you can use any hair you want but I believe most use bucktail or craft fur. Darice long pile is good stuff, and I just bought a bunch of the new Hairline extra Select craft fur but haven't used it yet. If you can find the old Targus craft fur get it, it's good stuff. You should be able to get the stuff from Crazy Angler Tackle or any other shop that carries fly tying stuff, just compare prices to get the best deal.
I used feathers on the ones I made. However I think Craft Fur as Fatman said.
Gnats that I have seen were made using kiptail or rubber legs
Kip Tail with flash.
Deer belly hair or bucktai/flash, rubber legs/flash work really good for me.
Mine were maribou and flash on a regular aberdeen that worked great. Tie some of each and let the fish tell you.
post up pics of your gnats pleeese!!
Yes Please post some pics.
Im waiting on my materials to come in the mail but I will try to post some pics. if someone would like to post theirs I think everyone would like to see them.
Attachment 149142Attachment 149143The 4 gnats on right are kiptail with flash. 2 on left are Rabbit tied over a body of Cheniel. The other 2 are some poney heads without blades tied with Fishair and flash.
Cray the only think I would ask is if the kip tail was cut after it was tied in? I never cut the natural ends off just for reference. Only cut the end that comes off the tail.
No Skip the Kip is just the natural ends. Just my picture taking. I learned not to trim ends by reading your posts. I used to trim Maribu until reading your posts so now i strip it down and cut to length. Im not very good at it but have learned a lot from watching you and the other guys on here.
Okay then your good to catch! LOL! Glad you got away from that.
