Thanks skip jsflyfishing had exactly what I needed will be placing an order with them. Do you sell any of your powder paint?
Dumb question but what's different bout saltwater hackle? I've heard of it but never have seen it. Can it be used in fresh water ?
Hey Pappa you order some of that saltwater, I'll go in on the shipping with you and order some also !
I believe but correct me if I am wrong but I think it is thinner than regular neck hackle? Some of the guys that I have seen and talked to that tie use it but I have never thought to ask what the difference is. But to me it looks thinner.
Hey Redge you got it. Let me run some traps and I'll get with ya!
I bet Skip or Pepop will be along with a detailed explanation for us!
Might have to put a nibble on my hook to get em to bite! LOL
It's what I use and it's not thinner as far as wide and it's longer than regular. Regular neck hackle is 3" to 5" and SW Neck hackle is 4" to 6" and sole even longer at times. The more thin and stiffer hackle would be the Saddle Hackle and it's used more for collars and palmering, but can be used for a tail as well. I like the Salt Water Neck Hackle especially because it wider and I think more webby.
also Hareline's SW Neck Hackle to me is better quality than any other I have tried. That is what both of the links above have. Like I said it's what I have used for 10 years or more now.
Thanks Skip! That's what I thought, but didn't want to speculate.
If you're cutting "V's" for your tails, SW Hackle is the ONLY way to go. The width of the V's, after the tip is removed make for much fuller tails right behind the chenille.
Thanks Skip and Pepop. That's the info I was looking for. Redge, I'll holler at ya tomorrow after I get on my computer at work. Much better to do things like ordering there.
Okay Pappa
Skip you beat me to the punch. That is what I use also. Great material to tie with. They can also be used to imitate hair when tied as a collar and tied back. Don't be fooled this stuff has good action. Used it for years for tying yellow perch jigs.
Redman
Thanks Redman. That's good info for this rookie!
More very useful information. Gary
Reviving an old thread on salt water hackle ,
i went to the links above and nothing is actually labeled salt water hackle.
do you just look for the longer lengths and that is what salt water hackle is?
thanks
Okay if the hackle is from Hareline, it's Salt Water! Some others have it and yes it's longer and more webby and wider too on average. The others that have it I have tried and is okay, but if you want the best feathers, buy packages from Hareline! Salt Water Neck hackle will always cost more than regular size will, but I think it's worth it enough that I only buy regular if I can't get that color in SW hackle! That is just me though, but a lot of guys at some point tend to agree with what I have felt for years!
Thanks
