What kind of trolling motor you useing , If you are useing a terova or ever thinking of getting one you want to go with a Humminbird setup.
I'm running hummingbird now. But I like lowrance
Humminbird 1198 front and back.
bird 898 and 788 with terrova 80
IMO this means you already have your mind made up on what you want to upgrade to. That being said I run a bird 998 and really like it. However, I personally believe that birds and lowrance both are really nice units and both show a nice picture. I think that DI was better on the lowrance models as of last year and SI better with humminbird. The new models like the ION and IONIX series are out with humminbird now and im anxious to see the difference. Ill probably always stick with birds, "aint broke dont fix it thing" but thats just me!
Yeah I might just stick with hummingbird just cus its user friendly and my boat is already set up for it. Good talk guys.
I looked at boat show in Collinsville on Friday for the ipilot link. I wanted it bad but couldn't pull the trigger. I am selling my 25 hp motor and when that is done plan to upgrade. Does the spot lock work better with the ipilot link. The spot lock on mine is the only thing I was disappointed in. Minn Kota advertises within 5 feet but mine is more like 20 feet with wind and current.
798 up front & 998 at the wheel very happy
It wont start kicking in until 15 feet. If you got a spot you want to stay on you need to throw out a marker. I usually use mine to stay close so that I don't drift off when taking off fish or changing tackle.
I had read somewhere that the Ilink helped the spot lock. 15 feet works okay except at Rend Lake near the bridges where bumper boats seems to be the rule.
I have an Lowrance HDS 8 gen 1 on the console and a Lowrance hds7 gen1 (which I bought used) on the bow. I can say I've been pleased with what I have. I have never had the opportunnity to to
see or use a Bird. So I can't compare the two. But like I said I've been pleased with my Lowrance units. Side scan I would definitely get( Lets you see things off on the side of the boat) Invaluable for
spotting brush piles and things like stake beds. Downscan is great for seeing fish in brush piles once you learn how to read and adjust your unit. This cuts down on fishing unproductive areas. If you
want to compare some pictures of the two brands go the web site Bass Boat Central, Go to forums. Then scroll down the page and they will have Lowrance and Hummingbird actual pictures
( screen shots) hope that helps. Roach
Ipilot 36volt and HD12's. First Ipilot and will never go back to anything else for crappie/walleye fishing. Minnkota have this year a universal bracket to switch back between fortrex and ipilot. Have the bracket on order and will be installed first week of Feb. Now they are really thinking....switch back n forth between crappie and bass fishing.
Spot lock is not 5ft based on my time on the water. Agree pending wind and current more like 20ft. Even in calm water is a stretch to say 5ft but that is based only on my personal time on water.
They came out with some updates when the Link first came out that helped spot lock a lot according to some of the other forums I watch. I don't have one now, but wish I did.
I've got an 1197 and and 1198 and bought my terrova I-pilot before the link came out.
If you really want to spend some money.....look at the 360 too.
I run 2 HB898's that are networked together. Like the system a lot.
I just installed a 999 back and 859 front hummingbird. Haven't used em yet but sure look pretty
My new boat will be outfitted very similar to the previous boat. Lowrance HDS 8 with Structure Scan & point 1 antenna at the stern. Lowrance HDS 10 with Structure Scan & Point 1 antenna at the Bow. Both units will be linked to share waypoints and map cards. I also have an 80# Terrova trolling motor. I would not have a boat without it, period.
The New Chirp technology with spotlight scan may be an upgrade I look to in the next year or 2 once they get it to work with the Terrova which I was told they are working on now.

You think HB is going to let lowrance stuff work on their trolling motor? I doubt it myself as they have market cornered right now. They might be able to make some features kind of work but when you get talking about ipilot link system there is no way they can pull that off with out minn kota letting them and that wont happen.
Do you know what the Spotlight Scan is? How it works? I was told they are working on one to work with Electric Steer trolling motor (Terrova) I never said a thing about the I-Pilot link. Did I? That really does not interest me to any degree. Sorry if I stated it in a way to make you think something else.
Dan
there was a story not long ago that lowrance is working with motor guide to make their equipment work together but dont know about HB I was trying to say that Im sure if anyone is going to try and make advancements on their systems I would think it would be for the top of the line which would be the link, I didnt mean to put words in your mouth Sorry.
Are you familiar with the Spotlight Scan & Chirp technology, Sonar Hub, and how it works? Pretty top of the line but then so is the setup I have IMHO.
Dan
I looked it up works like 360. Not the same but let's you see ahead
Wonder if you can mark waypoints on the spotscan screen?
I looked at the info on the point 1 GPS and it was very good giving your heading and precise location. Shout out to mean v
I will also have 2 separate transducers (sonar & structure scan) at the bow and at the stern. I think the big advantage of the speed and accuracy of the Point 1 antennas would be lost to some degree if they were not located as close as possible to your respective transducers. Same goes for looking at structure scan at the bow that is being read at the stern.
That is the reason I am going with a second box & structure scan transducer located with the Point 1 at the bow. Units are linked together only to share mapping cards & waypoints.

[QUOTE=MeanV2;2537860] Units are linked together only to share mapping cards & waypoints.
I didnt think you can share map cards between units, is this new?
your right. it will work on gen2
Im running hummingbird minn kota i polit link i love follow the contour
Whatever I decide I will add the point 1 gps to it.
1991 Bass Tracker Pro17 with a 25hp Evinrude. Edge 70 trolling motor with Garmin 300c at the bow and nothing at the console... I got the big dog setup!!
;(
Birds for me (898 at console and 858 on bow) networked together and also Minn Kota TERROVA with IPilot link. Have been around Lowrance units and they're nice too. Its really a coin toss.
Love my humminbirds!!! I have the 898 on the console and a 858 on the trolling motor by far the best investment I made
