AGM batteries are different and require a different charge cycle which an automatic charger adapts to when the AGM setting is pushed.
The nice thing about the Schumacher Solid State Battery Charger is that you can see how much juice is left percentage-wise, though 100 percent without the green full-charge light on is not finished charging. The support at Schumacher is wonderful and I learned a lot about battery charging from them.
If you have a regular fluid acid type battery, a float trickle charger is okay as long as you use it after the battery is 100 % charged. It isn't recommended for AGM or Gel type batteries which hold their charges much longer without self discharge anyways. The Schumacher should be fine as a trickle charger and regulates amps as needed.
