Get you 2 60 or 70 inch drift socks. If that don't slow you enough it's time to go home.
Depends on what terrane you are fishing, open flats socks work well. In the timber its chains, what I use 95% of the time.
I cussed socks in the timber fishing by myself while prefishing the Crappie Masters, what a pain in the butt. I rarely hang a chain up and most of the time the rabbit button will pull em loose.
I second chains. Never tangled a fish in a chain, but they always find socks.
Chains for me. Run two so you can help the boat track straight by running one off each side of the transom.

How do you rig it? What length of rope to the chain and what length of chain and what diameter of chain do you recommend?
Chain work best for me also. I have a 6 foot heavy chain hooked to a 100 foot rope and drop it off the back of the boat and adjust the trolling motor speed to keep me moving at just the right speed. The more rope you let out the slower you will go. I have used this in high wind conditions and was able to move along at 0.5 mph tight lining. A plus: if I pass over a big school I can shut the trolling motor off and stop on top of them.
I run 2 sets on 25 foot of rope. Need longer ropes if fishing deeper water. Each chain is a 5 foot section of 5/16 and another section I can add if needed that is 5 foot long in 1/4 inch. I pull 2 most the time to help keep the boat straight

A friend I work with used a Lindy Drift Sock last week for the first time and he loved it. It had a strap attached to the small end that enabled him to bring it back into the boat with little effort.
Socks for me pulling a mere few feet from the motor. I can longling over top of them. I dont fish timber...just flats.
I have found that it will slow the boat to a stop if you put it on the trailer and park it while you go downtown for a cool pop. Works every time.

okay...i guess im just extra dense but how does this work. Are you actually dragging the bottom with the chains or are they just dangling in the water creating drag that way? Thanks for the help!

I am a recent addition to this site and have already learned a bunch by just keeping my mouth shut and READING which is what I shoulda done last night cause as soon as I posted my plea for advice I realized there was a page deux and saw where chains drag the bottom...D'OH! I learned a loooooooong time ago about the fun of catching our number one prey-the CRAPPIE by going on much loved fishing trips with my dad and grandpa and sitting under a bridge during those hot summer nights on Lake Hartwell until my lil ol' eyelids just gave up and i'd wake up as we pulled back into the drive somewhere in the wee hours. Then much later in life my father-in-law introduced me to bank fishing in the spring.....oh the beloved springtime for us Crappie fishermen huh? I still am in awe of my father-in-law and his prowess at finding the fish and putting em on the stringer!!!! Now i'm an old fart with a boat for the first time in my life and I wanna learn the art of spider rigging to add to my other experiences at catching our beloved, great eatin fish!!!!
this is a good place to learn / maby you cam make the git to gather in April at Lake Blackshear we do have a good time . i will be camping most of that week . the git to gather fish fry is on sat. hop to have a lot of prizes to sell tickets for the drawing .
