I never done one but I been told there not hard to do. Fire ants for a week and some hair bleach from sally's
Fire ants are not a problem, but i'm afraid the possums, coyotes and hogs would run off with the head. I've been told to boil the meat off the head. I'd just about as soon feed some of those bugs the taxidermist has.
I can do them. I do taxidermy on side.
ABH, I had a guy call me about an hour ago that I promised it to. I will keep you in mind though. I will be having more done this way.
I like the Euro mount better than capping the skull and putting it on a board from Wally World.
No prob man.
I've done one, via boiling the head. Thank goodness my regular cooking doesn't smell like that! Only problem was some dogs still got ahold of it. So it I s just tossed under the shed with the rest of my horns.
If you rub it in the ants allowing a bunch to get on it...then hang it in a tree they'll go up the tree and clean it and dogs/coyotes/etc can't get to them. Ants can communicate quite a ways.
While that sounds like pain just waiting to happen, I know Scrapper & his roommates in college did several longhorn skulls that way.
tanning hides...now THAT is a pain...before, during, and after the process....sheesh. I'll NEVER do or help with that again.
Just now read this thread but yes sir I do them myself I see that someone is doing it for you but if u decide to do next years buck yourself you can always pm me and pick my brain they really aren't hard to do and as long a you have a whole day to dedicate to doing it They're really not bad at all The smell of the meat boiling is the most unpleasant part but I grew working in the slaughter house for dad and there ain't much that bothers me like that Sorry that I didn't see this thread till today ... I been too busy lurking on them boys fishing posts
I appreciate all the replies. I may try the ant thing as I have an endless supply of fire ants. (Nothing short of a nuclear blast would rid us of them).
I may end up with another buck before the year is out as gun season is open till January 5. I might try the boiling the meat off. I skin a lot of hogs so I don't figure it could be much worse.
Like I said it stinks, but it's nowhere near as bad as some smells you'll run across....like a gut shot buck.
Lol. The gut shot buck won't hold a light for a gut shot wild hog to run by. I could stand the boiled brains
Worst I've smelled was when I watched a guy skin out a cow....that had been hit by a log truck! It was swollen big time & it exploded in his face when he put the knife to it.
