I've had one for about six months, and I love it. Only downside is the occasional software download. I fish the Ohio river mostly for bass and the occasional crappie trip, but even when I fish shallow most of the year, it's still an eye opener. I also found tons of deep brush this summer at local reservoirs. I like how you can stop the screen to look at something, and mark it. Then drive over it with DI. Makes looking for deep cover way more efficient. Sometimes screen shots will blow you away. Now I need to convince my wife I need one at the bow so I can link them. You will not be disappointed.
tookmanycasts...is your unit the 898 or the new 2014 model 899...??
Here is the 1st discussion I've ran across of the HB 899ci HD SI Combo actually received by a customer .... (Maybe not the 1st sold...but the 1st discussion I've seen on any of the boards .... and I read a lot of boards)...

With your money go ahead and get an 1100 series. And 360 viewing!
What's 360 viewing mean? 1100 outa my range I live in BAMA ...
it looks mainly like a forum to to gripe about the politicans to me. I didnt really find out anything to much about how the unit really worked.
Try this then http://www.humminbird.com/360Imaging/
That's a little much for me. I think SI will suffice. Thnx for the link
Now you have my curiosity up.....
360 = whoa that's stout.....That's a two grand add on. That's a lotta captain d fish plates there buddy.LOL
Seriously...there's been a lot of that in that forum lately...but there is some valid info in that thread...
2 of the most important...:
*899ci HD SI Combo comes with the compact SI xducer (455kHz only)...but it can be traded in to HB for the HDSI (455kHz and 800kHz)...with a small $$ upgrade fee...

*899ci HD SI Combo requires the AS EC QDE adapter cable IF you are going to Ethernet anything to the unit...because the Ethernet cable now goes into the cable collector...

Rees guide what are you running for sonar?
Old stuff rite now but am in the market. Had a 798 (to small), had an Elite7 (too slo). Rite now I have an LCX28 at the bow with a 4000gps puck on it and an Elite 5DSI at the console which I only use for depth and the map, dang thing will read depth at 60 mph and the gps keeps up very well too, not sure what happened to the Elite7s but the GPS sure wasnt near what I thought it needed to be, didnt keep it 3 weeks.
Looking at both Hummingbird and Lowarance rite now and the Bird is getting the lean rite now due to the fact that I fish shallower water most the time, less than 20 foot deep.
It's not a 899 but I installed a 859 hd di on my trolling motor.i took it out for the first time yesterday and I'm very pleased with it. The screen is bright and it seems to process very fast.and for the money you can't beat it.i got it from Brian at bbg marine. Great guy with great pricing
I had to buy high speed dual beam transducer for mine
You have to have both. The included transducer only works for si and di, and only works up to seven mph. You'll also need a y cable to hook up both
So you're saying the 899 doesn't come with a 2d ( non si or di) transducer?

No it comes with a combo si and di, but you have to have a dual beam high speed transducer for your traditional 2d sonar. The di/si trans. Only works up to 7 mph. You will also need the y cable to hook them both up.
Sorry, misread your post and repeated myself. It's all pretty easy to install. Also you must hook directly to battery with a 3 amp fuse. You also may want the ferrite choke to cut down on interference.
The transducer does include the 2d crystal.......It has left and right SI and 2d. The DI is derived from SI.
The transducer is capable of getting 2d readings at high speed. The only limitation is the transom and hull type and the installation. Some have reported good readings at 50-60MPH. The transducer just needs turbulent free water to operate at high speeds.
The 899 can use the HDSI transducer and Humminbird will upgrade as detailed by Rickie.
Thanks, that is what I was looking for
