Is Clinton frozen?
COE website says 60 or so percent ice cover.
Yesterday, marina ramp open water out around the marina. no wake markers iced in but should be thin enough to get to. shorts being caught off the docks unlike Thursday and friday dock fishermen limiting out on A dock over deep water channel. Warmer weather coming in Tuesday-Thursday might loosen up the ice. I'll be on the docks Wed.
Went there today to look at it and the lake was ice covered. The Marina cove was open around the docks and someone made it the point across from the ramp. Saw some guys cleaning a healthy stringer of fish.

I drove by today as well and it was spotty. Lots of ice but it looked like you could get a boat through it without much trouble.
I heard from some of the dock fishermen that yesterday, Monday, they where catching good numbers of keepers of A dock in the deeper channels. I hope their still there on Wed.
What's up Captain Dan. Sorry I haven't been able to go fishing lately. Holidays/kids/busy schedule means no fishing. I have a small window to go fishing tomorrow and I think I might make the shorter trek to Smithville and fish the docks for a bit. 50 degree weather in December makes it easy to go for a couple hours.
Looks like a nice day to get the boat out.
Does anyone know if the boat ramps at the marina are open? Is the lake iced in?
Are you catching fish?
Looked at lake from the #2 ramp by the Marina, and it looks like the ice is busted up partially around the docks and there is open water around the marina. Everywhere else is locked up with ice that is approx 2 inches thick. You might be able to punch the ice to launch and be in open water around marina.
Crappiewhiped,
Thanks for the report
I went last night,430 to 900 didnt get a bite at the marina. fished the creek channel.the ramp is open. marked fish just couldnt get em to hit. seen some dock guys dragging empty 5 gallon buckets before it got dark so i dont think they caught them either.went to boat dock 5 first it has 2 inches of ice, punched a hole with my hammer.
What where you fishing with? so I know what not to use.
Fished the docks around the marina from 10-12:30, when the wind shifted from the NW and the temp dropped quick it as time to head home. Not even a tap. Do you think I could get a refund on my fishing license I bought yesterday or will I be told that I should have bought the "catching" license that cost more?
As I was driving away from the marina I noticed a portable ice shack out about 3-400 yards from boat ramp 1 and without binoculars it looked like someone had fallen through the ice with only his shoulders and head above the ice. Not sure if someone had fallen through the ice I called Jon the game warden for Clinton to tell him what I am thinking is a bad situation. He was at Clinton but on the other side of the lake so he said he would head my way. Within 2-3 minutes I'm hearing sirens getting closer and saw 2 sheriff dept cars pulling into the #2 boat ramp parking lot to look with binoculars at the ice shack. I told them I was the one that called Jon from the #1 ramp where I could see the other side of the shack where it looked like someone fell through. About then here came the fire dept and ambulances into the #1 ramp parking lot. I went over there to see if they could verify what I thought I saw. The sheriff department had ran the tags on a pick up that was the only vehicle in the parking lot and somehow got the cell phone number of the guy out on the ice. They told me he was okay as they where talking to him on the phone, THANK GOD. I apologized to the sheriffs about causing the excitement but was told they where bored anyway and the fire department realized how unprepared they where IF someone does fall through the ice way out on the lake.
On a lighter side of the events, I asked the sheriffs if anyone was going to go out on the ice to check on the guy. A heavy set sheriff told me he was not going to go out on the ice, which I replied you probably should not go out on the ice since it looks like he has been hitting the doughnut shops way too much. All the other sheriffs and firemen thought that was too funny. Now I better watch my speed around Lawrence since they all know my vehicle.
Glad no one was in the lake! There just is not ice thick enough for me to get out on. I think it is part not trusting the ice and part to big of a baby to be out in the cold! I dont like cold weather and tend to park by the fire inside!
I have spend plenty of time out on the ice in my younger years and quite honestly I am surprised I never fell through. We used to drive out on the lakes and ponds when I was in high school and spin donuts. It was a blast at the time and had it not been for the alcohol I would like to think I would have had better sense! Now I keep my butt on land when the water turns hard. Just not worth the risk anymore.
Congrats Dan, you made the State Website for the officers log book.

Patrolled area for antler-less deer hunters. Assisted Sheriff's Dept. with check welfare on subject missing since 2 a.m. on New Years Day, turned out subject found an open laundry room at an apartment complex to stay warm and was located walking in town. Checked some small game hunters at state lake. Responded to salvage tag request. Met with state park staff in reference to 10-40 located on in park boundaries. Assisted Sheriff's Dept. with suspicious activity which sounded like hunting activity, turned out to be landowner having a cookout. Checked some waterfowl hunters who were confused on what was open, good thing they didn't shoot any ducks. Received report of someone falling through ice, after everyone shows up ice fisherman looks out of his ice shack and sees all the emergency vehicles decides to call 911 and tell them he is ok, (not his fault.) Fisherman did say the ice was about 6 in thick.
The guy who you thought fell through the ice had very good luck.
Was that you out there?
No, it wasn't me. However I do know who it was.
Went by today and there was a small patch out by the dam that was open. The marina ramp was open but iced over by the buoys. The ramps were pulled out of the water.
