I think they call the area "The open water". If you can find these along the channel.

Nice billy. Those your houses
Nice! Is that Tulot?
Yes its Tulot. Those stakes were there JW. they are every where
Good Job Billy! In the second picture you posted, turn to your left and go about two hundred yards back towards the channel, nice stump field in there. Also go North to the clubhouse, lots of submerged tops in some deeper water up that way.
Thanks gzrglide. Water level at a little over 11'. I like that level. Been spending most of my time marking structure with my side imaging. Just putting the puzzle together.
That looks like good jiggin stuff there
in 10 days the corp turns the wappello lake water loose and I don't know how it effects the river down there but it raises it several feet where I duck hunted all my life. it spread the water all over and out of the river banks. good for duck hunting but bad for fishing till the water cleared back up.
I wonder if GW drove those stakes? I know he manages to keep a fish or two hemmed up out there.
Is that from oak donnick to the east from ramp? Never fished that part before so not too familiar
with that water. Do worry bout me catching all the fish,my wife says I cant catch fish unless I pay someone to take me........
Hey Billy, forgot to mention in the last post, it's called the "Wide Water", and Yes tommyboyrn, that is straight out the run at Oak Donnick and to the left or North. I don't have my gps in here or I could tell you the coordinates of the crappie condo's in the picture. There are a lot of those crappie condo's spread all over the flats on each side of the main river channel in the wide water.
thanks grizglide. Is it better when water falling or rising over on river. never fished that before
Not meaning to hijack Billies thread, but to answer your question Tommy, harder to find quality fish when the water is high and they can spread out, but more than the level of the river is the clarity of the water. If it is swift and muddy, might as well go home.
Thx grzglide
I fished the sunken lands a ton when I lived up there. All my fishing was in the stretch between Lake City and Trumann. In the fall and early winter is when I had my best luck b/c the water was typically down and clarity was good. Anywhere where two sloughs/ditches/or the river/etc intersected were great areas for kentuckies and largemouths. I only bass fished it, but the bass were there b/c the baitfish were. Fairly certain the crappie get in those areas too - those might be some areas to try. I've fished all over central and eastern Arkansas in my life and that area, when conditions were right, was the coolest place I've ever fished. I'm highjacking too, but I get fired up when I think about that place. Been 10 years since I fished it - December 4, 2003 to be exact LOL
it's fixing to get high and muddy or muddier. the corp turns the water loose tomorrow. takes 2 days to get where I duck hunted and I'm guessing 4 or 5 down there.

It takes almost a full week from the state line to Lakecity and a few days more from Lakecity on down to the wide water. That sounds crazy, but that's the way it is.
It got muddy Saturday night. I looked at it saturday at Culkerburr and it looked great. The wife and I were looking for mistletoe and eagles so I didnt fish. Returned Sunday morning it was muddy and 1 1/2' higher. Launched boat and fished 3 hours with no bite. First time I put in on the side of river and got to do a lot of exploring. Found some deep water that I never would have thought was there.
How did you guys know when they were going to turn the water on?
billy if you are ever over this way I have some mistletoe that would be easy to shoot down.

Continuing with the above, had to close and restart my browser on this stinkin' Windows lap top, gonna have to switch back to my Mac if I am going to spend much time on the web tonight. Each year in December, the Corp Draws down Lake Wappapello, that always causes a surge down here for us, as RCC said earlier, takes about a week for it to hit us when they jack the water flows up thru the dam at Lake Wap. According to the above article, the drawdown started today, so sounds like might have to go troll the ditch around the edge of Lake Hogue.
top that with the rain I hope we get,,, 2 + in. possible we will be killin ducks in them woods instead of fishin
:hesaid
Thanks for the info gzrglide. You or anybody else are not hijacking this thread. I have a lot to learn about the river and this site is where I learn it. I have found that water level is the most important thing so far.
hit the places the water is running back into the channel from the woods. bass gather up there.
Thanks Billy,
Watch Rivergages.com, St. Francis River near Tulot is the graph you want. Level 209.5 to 210.5 are normally pretty good, but I also watch the last 30 days, if it is rising or falling fairly quickly, probably going to be muddy. Fairly stable water level in the range above, fishing is usually pretty good.
Just bookmarked it
I also like it at about 212-213. Above that it gets real difficult. At 212-213 you'll have some current, go out the ditch at tulot and head north. Hit the cypress knees on the south side of the tree's where the current is blocked. If you don't catch them on one side of the river go to the other side and just keep working north dipping your jig around the cypress trees . On nice afternoons during duck season I have good luck just relaxing and slowly working around the cypress trees, plus I can watch for ducks and know where I want to set up the next morning. Good luck.
Thanks CastandBlast for the info
Great post. Thanks for the info
Should be plenty of water in there now.
Looks like plenty of rain, this is what was recorded at Oak Donnick...

Well, the graph doesn't want to come thru, I can see it before I post, but it ain't shown when I the reply button...
To put things in perspective. In a couple days the bank fishing should be pretty good...off the top of the levees:biggrin
Lets just hope it doesn't start backing up around he south end of the levee's again and back up all the way to payneway (Harrisburg Corner, for you old farts) like it did a couple years back. River got so high that it backed up into Burnt Cane and the fishing ain't been right there since.
Yea, but think I am going to have to give it a shot this year to see if I can figure out the new pattern down there.
