The 598ci HD SI Combo is basically the same as the 798 except...:
*1 card slot instead of 2...
*no preset buttons...
*Unimap instead of Contour XD
*and not networkable...

I have been using one for about a year. Took me awhile to learn about side image. With the smaller screen I find it show detail of items best if set side distance between 20' to 30' out both sides depending on water depth. You can hide the sonar views you don't want to see. I have a 598 si/di for sale.i bought it back in the spring,like new. I wanting to sell it because I purchased a bigger unit.
Bout how much you looking to get for it jdubworm?
I have all original paperwork including box,also purchased a hard plastic cover for it. I'll take $500 for it.
Thats a good price on the hb jdubworm, i'm gonna have to wait a lil while before i can buy one. Just got the new fish finder fund started. Prob be up in spring before ready to buy. Did it seem like you could see good detail n such on the si? I have the 597cihd now n love it.
I would buy it, good price and it is much better than 597 DI, and even better than new 698 SI ($700) which has narrower 5” screen.

Yesterday Humminbird official site placed Manual for 698ci HD SI:

when I clicked “Download Product Manual” it offered me Manual for 598ci HD SI, that means that 698ci HD SI is technically absolutely the same, but 598ci HD SI has wider screen, that is extremely critical for Side imaging, and cheaper – buy it!
698ci HD SI could have advantage with his taller screen if they add one more screen view of both SI sides in DI format (vertically).

There are three extra buttons on 698ci HD SI unit panel, but in referenced Manual for 598 they are not shown, and no information what for they are. I tried to open Manuals for 678c DI and 688 ci HD DI which have those three buttons on Humminbird web site, but links do not work and show something different. I do not know how to open these manuals, and hope that the real manual for 698 is different of 598 and have some new features, that make that new 600 unit better than 500 series.
At the moment it just looks like the 698 SI is the worse product for bigger money.
if those 3 buttons are what I think they are they're pre-set buttons for views that you want quick reference to. like the buttons on your car radio
Yes, they are preset buttons. The map just shows white unless you buy the sd map card
