Jig Tying Combinations

I'm thinking of tying some jigs due to the low cost it takes to put one together, and the ease and creativity to make your own jig that will land some fish. I'm looking at the variety of color combos that I can order, and since I've not been crappie fishing in the past few years, I'm needing to rely on those of you that are using jigs to help me out on color combos. What are the primary colors that you are getting hits on and under what conditions? Hook sizes? Jig weight? Any input is appreciated! Thank you.

Wow that is a mouth full. Guys use anything from a 1/32 or even smaller is some cases to a 1/4 oz jig. Just depends on the person. Colors depend on your water. Tell us more.

however any color is good as long as it's chartreuse! That is the old saying that everyone uses and pretty true. Also don't plan on saving money tying you on jigs, it is not going to be like that. It's very addicting and all of us spend way more than you would ever dream of.

I was looking at tying a probably on a round head 1/8 oz hooks. Nothing extremely fancy, but overall nice jig. Im looking for the base colors for certain water colors. Its difficult to say what color I will be fishing exactly as what color varies on any lake as affected by the weather. I use the tie a few trout flies, but didn't fly fish enough to keep doing it. As for as price, I can't say I wouldn't get addicted, but overall it cost much less to tie a simple jig than it does to buy it. I'm not looking to produce jigs for the cost, but more to create a jig that works well that I may not be able to buy that color combo in the store. I'm looking for several different colors and types of tail material, body material, and head color to produce some nice, productive jigs. Knowing there are unlimited combinations and water color combos, I'm not expecting combos for that many conditions, just a few basic combos that people are finding to work well.

Nothing better than catching fish on something you tied! I will tell you this, I go buy if I can see my jig down 3' it's clear and if less than that to about 1' I call stained based on my lake I fish. If less than 6" it's just plan old muddy.

for really stained I really like a flame red head, black and fl yellow variegated body and hot orange tail especially marabou if spring and shallow. If I can see less than 3' my favorite is Chart/Blue/Chart and for a simple jig once it gets clear I love a Silver/Blue/White jig. On the last one some guys only use that all the time and a neck hackle tail. Now I have been tying a huge number of unpainted head, Gray Body and gray and tiny bit if black tail. If you look at my site and see my little stingers, that is it and I am sure if you read a little hear you will see me talking about the tail and my little V's.

I can see now by what you mean when you say tying jigs is addictive. Was looking up adding up some different materials that caught my eye and ended up with a cart of over $200. Think this must be the version of crafts for men haha.

It's the craft version of crack, LOL! I have an entire room full of stuff, it's crazy! I do try to warn everyone that wants to start this really wonderful hobby that even as good as it is, it can be very costly over time and also why I say buying jigs even at their price is cheaper, LOL!

Yeah its definitely more expensive when purchasing supplies, but I believe it would be a better way for me to produce some jigs that are possibly more productive and that I probably could find otherwise.

With $200 in materials you could tie thousands of jigs and catch thousands upon thousands of fish. The key is to not buy what you don't need. Pick 5 color combos THAT WORK WHERE YOU FISH.

Oh I agree with that for sure and I would do it all over again. I am sure you will love this and after you start catching fish it will just get better and better. I tie way more jigs than I can use mostly just because I love tying.
