36 volt battery system

Querstion. If the number 2 battery is bad, how many volts will me meter show?
I've been having TM problems. It won't even turn on when I lower it.
Yesterday, when I hooked up the volt meter to the wires, it only showed a little over 12 volts. One thing that has been going on is when I hook up my charger, after about 20-30 minutes, the number 2 battery at the charger is having a blinking red light. That's usually either a bad battery or the charger bank has gone bad if I read the book correctly.
I'm pretty sure I did the volt meter right. I turned it around twice and set it to 50 which it said go to the next one higher than what should be coming through.

It's very possible that you could be showing 12 volts if the number two battery is bad. Basically you have a broken chain. Therefore, you would have 12 volts coming in from positive and 12 volts going out to the negative on the other battery.

Put a different set of charger leads that you know is working right on the battery that you think is bad. That will let you know if it's the battery or the charger that is bad.

Also put the questionable set of leads on a good battery to see if it works correctly.

That should have no effect on the batteries. If it did, I'd open a battery shop at every marina on the coast!!! ;-)

Somethings up Bill. I have brand new wires and only getting 12 volts when it should be 36. That told me that something is wrong with number 2

Where are you connecting your test leads?

You can also go to an automotive or battery store and they will load test the batteries for you.

Quit guessing, take em all out or at least unhook em, no wires connected, charge em and load test em. Just checking volts after charging don't mean crap, LOAD test em. If they are all good ohm test all wiring, if good clean all connections and put it back together. It aint rocket science, fairly simple just a pain. Good luck, hope its just a bad wire or connection.

Do a voltage check on each battery. Is this the system that you just replaced one battery in awhile back ? Its not a good idea to just replace one battery.....to do so you just bring your new battery down to the level of your older weaker ones and shorten your battery life.

Rees is right about the load test also. Measure specific gravity in each cell with a hydrometer... if it passes that then load test.

Just take em to any parts or battery store like Tommy said and load test em and replace if defective. Simple!!!!!

I am gonna check them myself, THEN take them to get them checked but haven't had time to even look at it since I found the problem. They need to be at a full charge before they can test anything any how. I went to work at 6 AM yesterday, worked til 6, drove to Florence and taught class til 9 last night. Then back to work at 6 this morning. Do you see any time on there to do anything else? LOL

One thing is it MAY be the TM. I'm going to get another Jumper and hook it from 1 to 3 and try that. It'll come on with 24 volts. Helps narrow down the problems. I just wish I'd have gone ahead and gotten a new TM when I got this one. Paid $700 for it used and I've put $500 in it one time and $300 in it another. I just couldn't afford $1300 when I got it. I got what I could afford at the time.

Had problem with my truck battery and Torch load tested it should have 800 CCA only had 500. Needless to say it got replaced. So LOAD TEST them!

Depends on WHO's given the advise. Some folks on here that forget to hook their boat up properly or let their boat fall off the trailer on the ramp,. You think Ima listen to them. I think not. LOL I listen more often than not, just don't say nuttin.
Here's the plan. I need another short jumper to check to see if the TM is even working first. If it comes on under 24 volts, which it can, I'll take all 3 batteries out and get them all fully charged and take to battery place to get load tested. If it doesn't come on, I'll switch out the TM's and put my old one on for now. Least until I can get the terrova fixed.
THEN I'll go buy another battery if needed when I get it back. Why take them all out if it's the TM that's jacked up? I suspect it's the number 2 battery and the other TM is a 24 Volt so I only need 2 for it. One step at a time. Why do 14 things when only 2 are really needed? Guess if I was a fella that didn't have to work from daylight to dark every day, I'd have time to do that. :ThumbsUp

Didn't I read where the plan was to take some equity out of the just sold house and get this fixed right?

I did, I got the main motor worked on. that was over $800

One thing is I want to check everything out to make sure what the problem is. IF it's just batteries, then I don;t have to swap the TMs out. If it's the TM, then I have to swap them out and take it to Art to get fixed. I spect Art is backed up for a month. He always is so I need to do something
