Anybody ever use wax worms/bee moth for crappie? Any success?
Asked the gent that runs the bait store I frequent, he says they will bite them while he uses them for gills and redears. Not something he would use around here to target crappie though. Never caught any on them myself, but he is much more knowledgeable and experienced than I. Hope this helps.
I have had excellent success with waxies. I have not bothered with monnows in several years. I uses Berkley Nibbles and / or waxies on 1/64th to 1/32 jigs with great success.
Use them up here year round but especially thru the ice. Certain days crappies thru the ice will just nail a wax worm but turn its nose up at any minnow. Other days the opposite will occur. One thing I like about the waxies is almost anything will bite on them. Seen a guy on the ice use a cleo spoon with a warm worm on each of the 3 points on a treble hook. He caught a 6lb walleye on it and the rest of us went home skunked. I caught a 30# + Flathead catfish. I had to estimate him because he would not fit thru a 6 " hole in the ice. What in the world would a little wax worm on a pinmin convince that monster he needed to eat it.

I caught a 8lb Channel Cat last year on a Lindy Jig tipped with a Wax Worm on 4lb test Ultra light rod. It was a blast!!!Quote:

And Butter Worms work great for large Pumpkinseed and Rock Bass too. I think the little extra bit of color helps, plus they tend to be bigger.
I've used them on my 7 and 8 weight flyrod and had much success! Too much, keeping the gills off it. Grubs are still great!
They'll work, but you'll have to snag a crappie in between all the bluegills that'll be hitting it!
Academy sells waxworms for about $4 a cup. They work good for me as well. Still use minnows as that is the crappies natural bait.

I have had identical results with waxies and 1/64 & 1/32 jigs! Lots of crappies and bonus gills. I no longer use minnows for crappie.
I am wanting to get some waxies and see how they fair at my local lakes.
