I bought one and am not impressed. I wanted to package my deer meat in it but quickly figured out I need to freeze the meat and then seal it. If you don't, the blood gets in the vacuum chamber and it doesn't seal good. Maybe some brands are different but mine won't.
I just pack my deer meat in water in a good ole ziplock and freeze it. Just my thoughts on them.
If you get the Game Saver one at BPS, you'll love it. I bought one to replace the cheaper one I had, and you can seal wet fish, or anything with it. Food Saver brand.
I vacuum seal all my fish now. It's easy. I date all my packages, and use the oldest ones first. They will keep for 2-3 years. I usually don't keep mine very long, but have found some that got buried in the freezer that long and they were fine.

I have sealed 10-12 bags of fish at a time tho. Never had a single issue. My old one was was the 80-100 model from Wally World, and the pump diaphragm when out after 6 or 8 years of light use. I had to pat my fillets dry with paper towels when I used that one.
Randy, I'll dig mine out and see what brand it is. I don't remember right now. It was great to seal dry stuff. My other issue was the price of the bags.
I do freeze my deer just like I do my fish. It does not hurt it and I have zero freezer burn on the meat. Packed in water most items will last 3 years in the freezer and for the price of the sealer and the bags I can buy ziplocs for a lot of years.
I have the upright food saver vacuum sealer. It took a little bit of time to get used to but once I figured it out it works great. We seal all crappie, cereal for my baby girl, deer, duck, and other wild game. Previously I had a black and decker sealer it kind of worked but the juices would cause it not to seal properly. To solve this problem I would fold a paper towel to about an 1 1/2" wide and place it right in front of the fish. As I sealed the bag the paper towel would absorb the juices and I would get a complete seal. Also if you buy the pre cut food saver bags or the food saver brand rolls it becomes quite expensive, but gander mountain used to sell bulk off brand rolls that work very good. Also I searched online and found the 11" x 50' rolls for $19. The biggest savings that I can see using the vacuum sealer over freezing in water is the amount of room that you save in the freezer.
give this site a look , what I do to make sure of a good seal is I use waxed paper you can buy that real cheap at Wal-Mart or the dollor store wrap your fish or meat first then put in the vacuum seal bag works great never had any issue with a bad seal !!! check out the FoodSaver GameSaver Bronze its a nice unit !!!!

Randy, mine is a Food Saver brand. It seals up a mean bag of jerky!! :biggrin
quick fix to the blood is roll a paper towel up and stick in front of the meat it will stop it from messing the seal up :fish
What Popper said. HOWEVER, they now sell vacuum bags with a "moisture barrier" that is basically a built in paper towel.
One MAJOR piece of advice. After you finish a bag, move it down a 1/2 inch and SEAL IT AGAIN. THEN AGAIN THE THIRD TIME.
If you use the moisture sealer, and if you triple seal it, I guarantee it won't come apart in the freezer. What causes that is moisture inside the sealed part.
As for models, I have burned up 2 "Walmart" food saver brands. I got a fancy Cabela's and it sits in the shop because I found another Walmart type Cheapo Food Saver at my MIL's house after she died, and this one won't stop working. So I don't know which one to recommend. I use it for all fish and all deer though, and I'd never consider freezing meat any other way.
Weston. You can afford it. Hurry up and buy it so I can try it out next week.
My Game Saver Silver handles the moisture with no sealing issues. It has a deep drip tray that catches the water, blood, etc.
Used my Food Saver tonight.
As far as freezing meat 1st, put a papertowl in just above the meat to soak up any juices that might end up in the tray or interfere with the sealing process.
My Food Saver from Kroger the basic model doesn't get all of the air out of the bag.
Ahhhh Yea that was a $100.00 dollar lesson. Guess I need to go to Sams and buy some cereal smart a$$.
