Cant see the head but it looks like a Bowfin......what some folks call a grinnel

I saw a big one tear a yo-yo up once! It jumped and tail walked and pulled all the line out before I could skull back over to it! By the time I got within a few yards of the yo-yo, it broke the line, and the spring was sprung!...lol
On Tunica I have had them tear the lead head off spinner baits. Them dudes can sure put up a fight. Find some monsters in them old oxbows.
Fun to fish for with a worm and steel leader.

I laughed too when he said he stuck his thumb n that fishes mouth an turned it loose quick. Said it was like a meat grinder.
They are tough creatures for sure, once you get them in the boat the fight is just starting. They thrash around and bounce and tear up everything. Ditto on their mouth being a meat grinder. I hear the Cajuns are using the grinnel roe as a caviar.
I caught one on Big Sandy on a 4 1/2 foot ultralight - it was a fight and I thought it was gonna break my pole. Had no idea what it was at the time.
Jr. On Swamp People cleaned some and ran em through a meat grinder. Then he mixed in some bread crumbs, chopped celery, seasoning and a few other things and made fish cakes. Then he fried em in a fish fryer. Looked good!!!
If you eat them......eat them while they are hot......dont let it cool off lol
We used to fish for them for sport when i was a kid. We ate some occasionally, ain't bad if you know how to prepare them.
Friend caught 52 one day out of one hole. Had a stringer shot that made me laugh.

I dont like'em, try to pin one about 15lbs down on the deck of a boat and see what happens to ya if your a guy, all i could do was grunt and roll over and try not to puke. The whole time RG is laughing and saying " you ok man "

In southern Louisiana this is known as a Choupique (Choctaw for mud-fish) Here is Tony Chachere's recipe for them.... 1 Whole Choupique
2 tablespoon Tony Chacheres Original Creole Seasoning
1/2 cup Oil
2 Whole Chopped Onions
1 Whole Chopped Bell Pepper
8 Whole Garlic (minced)
1 can Tomato Sauce
1 can Rotel Tomatoes
2 cup Water
1/2 cup Lemon Juice
1 can Mushrooms
1/2 cup Chopped Green Onion
1/4 cup Chopped Parsley
Directions:
1: Cut fillets in to small pieces.
2: Season with Tony Chachere's Original Creole Seasoning and fry in oil in Dutch oven until firm.
3: Remove fillets from the oil.
4: Add onions, bell pepper, and garlic to the oil; saute' until tender.
5: Add tomato sauce, Rotel tomatoes, and water.
6: Add fillets and bring to a boil.
7: Reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes.
8: Do not stir; instead, gently lift the pot off the burner with both hands and tilt it from side to side.
9: Do this once or twice during cooking to prevent fillets from breaking apart.
10: Add lemon slices, mushrooms, green onions, and parsley; cook over low heat for another 15 minutes.
11: Serve over steamed rice.
Bowfin - I've hooked into a few before while fishing for gills. They always snapped the line with all those teeth.
Sure would like to land one. Sometimes in shallow water you can see some of them have a large spot on thier tailfin.
i have heard call a lot of things but bowfin was not one of them . my daddy use to hate catching them catfishing , i have caught some as big as 15 pounds or better . the old river sloughs are full of them . heard them called Cyprus bass . mean critters . can't believe EZ didn't know what it was . lol
One word of advice for anyone wanting to clean and cook one. Do not soak the meat in water if you do it will swell up and fall apart. You have to fillet them and wipe them down with a clean cloth. We always did this and sliced them into small thin pieces and deep fried. The meat is not flakey like bass or crappie, it has a very fine grain..
Good to bleed em as well, hang him up and cut it at the tail. Known a good many folks that eat em but have never tried it myself. Catch and release.
Well that just shows what them folks will eat . My daddy said lay them on a board and cuthem into steak with an axe or hatchet . Then you can peal the skin and scales off like a ring . And never let water touch the meat before you cook them . And eat them while there hot .
:puke You guys are grossing me out. Whenever I catch one down here, I cut the line on them. Don't want them in the boat. Nasty fish.
