I have an hb798ci hdsi on the bow of my boat. Just installed it. Had it on another boat and it worked. Unit is 6 months old and it will not find a GPS position. In the status it says GPS not connected. Any ideas on what to try?

Greg or Rickie can help you with this . My 788 did it once and Im not sure or remember how I fixed it . Is yours internal or external puck.
It is an internal system.
First thing would be to check to see if there is anything right over it to be blocking the signal. Wouldn't think just moving from boat to boat would affect anything. Don't know about your unit but on my 998 there is a menu section with a option to check GPS or trouble shoot.
Sometimes it takes a few minutes to acquire satillites...
Try restoring defaults and then power on the unit and wait a few minutes...
Are you outside in clear view of the sky...??
Rickie
Wide open and I left it on for over an hour and it never acquired a signal.
Use the menu button to find the GPS view. See what it says there. There's also a selection on one of the menus for antenna choice, make sure it's internal or auto.
If this unit is networked or was in your last installation, check the GPS antenna selection in the Networking Source Setup screen.
I can't even find that screen. I must be an idiot but I can't find it.
Press the menu button twice to get into the main menu system ....
Cursor over to the "Views" tab...
Cursor down to "GPS Diagnostic" ...
Cursor right or left to make the field say "Visable"...
Exit out of the menus and press the "View" button until the GPS diagnostic screen shows...
(Post a screenshot of this GPS diagnostic view if you can)...
Rickie
Rickie,
If his unit is not recognizing a GPS Receiver as being connected, it will not show the GPS menus or Views – including the GPS Diagnostic View.
hunters1,
Was this a stand-alone unit when it was mounted on the other boat or was it Ethernet connected?
I would try using the Restore Defaults menu first and if that does not help try checking all of the electrical connections between the 798 unit and the battery it is powered from. We have seen where a low current condition can cause the GPS Receiver not to work. No loose or corroded connections here and be sure to check the fuse holder, fuse and connections at the battery.
If that does not help you can try connecting the 798ci HD Si unit up to an external GPS Receiver if you have one or can find someone who has one on their boar and connect it up to theirs (along with the power and a transducer). This will help show whether the problem is on your boat or in the internal GPS Receiver inside the unit.
Greg, what you stated is the case. It is not showing in the views. It is not recognizing a GPS. It was linked to a terrova on the last boat but not linked to anything now. The wiring is brand new. No corrosion at all. It seems to have quit. I was able to get a gps signal when I initially hooked it up in the shop on the new boat. Nothing now.
It sounds like the internal GPS decided to die when you moved it than. Call the Humminbird Customer resource folks (1-800-633-1468) and see about getting it in to be fixed or buy an external GPS Receiver for it.
It is only 6 months old so it shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully it can be taken care of quickly.
While I was entering my below post, Greg has answered the question!
I am overnighting the unit to HB today in hopes of a quick resolution. I will report back on the units return.
:popcorn
Well it has shipped to be returned and the reason says "no fix" and the action says " keypad". I am assuming that means that they just went into the keypad and made the thing work. Greg, any insight on this and what I might have done to cause it?
The “no fix” was probably referring to the GPS Receiver not getting a “fix” on (receiving the signal from) the GPS satellites. I don’t know what the keypad has to do with that. I would have had to talk with the Tech who actually worked on your unit to know for sure. I knew I would be wrapped up for most of this week or I would have gotten you to send me some contact info and checked on it for you.
Received the unit back yesterday and it works. Quick response from HB.
Great testimony of customer service!
