Nice report on looks like a great place to fish and relax. I haven't checked yet, but how are the motels? How about setting up a slabfest next year, both by boat or barge fishing. Sounds like it would be a great get together.

Lived within 30 miles of the mighty mississippi my first 18 years and haven't fished there. Worked on a farm outside Red Wing in 1956, have seen Lake Pepin from the bluffs on Minnesota side. Are the barges like they use in Texas?? Looks like you've had a good time.--shu

Growling up fishing and boating the Illinois river, dealing with Huge Barges, their wake, and current was never boring.
The same for the great ole Mississippi. The current in those rivers would carry you on a float clear to New Orlean before you could spell Mississippi.
For a Real Life Experience going Through a lock and Dam in a small fishing boat whether it going up or down and the currents swirling like a water tornado within those dams while the water is being raised or lowered and the tug pushing those Barges with its props still turning and making that water Boil that much more, you would hang onto that seawall rope so tight sometimes your hand would bleed for fear of being sucked up by the swirling water.
To go back to the pleasantness of Barges sitting still and fishing off them would be great.
My cousin, Dale Hamm, years ago , took his Jon boat to Chicago, where he had acquired a retired grain barge (Huge) and tied that Barge alongside his little Jon boat and piloted the barge 150 miles down river to the town of Bath Illinois(Home of the Red Neck Fishing Tournament). He then commenced to build a Bar on top of it which for years became famous as Hamm's floating Tavern. Still there to this day.
People would come from all over the state to fish of it or have their favorite cocktail.
Maybe we should plan a Slabfest for there, but I do suggest the spring or summer, cause as much current as there is, ice still can form when those temps drop to zero for an extended period of time, which is another story about the ice on that river sinking my steel hauled Roamer. Another Day. FISH ON

This is a fantastic story Slab. I have never fished for Pike but I have caught my share of Walleye from Lake Erie when I was in Northeast Ohio. I was wondering if you were using the jigging spoon that you can manually bend a little so it has an erattic flutter. That is a pretty neat idea also about raiising the flag when you need transportation to the barge. The barge is well equipped with the bait shop and picnic tables plus it looks like it is in a great location near the dam. Fishing the Mississippi is on my bucket list of things to do. I visited the Mississippi when I was helping out in New Orleans after Katrina but did not have time to fish it. This summer I went to the Atlantic Ocean to see where my ancestors who were slaves landed in Charleston SC at the slave market. I also bought a nice 17' blue pearl bass boat. You know when you place something on your bucket list there is a good chance you will get it done. Loved the story and glad you took the time to write it up Ed.
Really neat story Slab. I like adventures like that. Different kind of fishing and meeting locals with some flavor. Interesting how the dam operators accommodate the fisher people and utilize the resource. Looks like you had fun !! Thanks for sharing!!
That sounds like a cool deal , everything ya need to fish on the barge.
I think this would be a GREAT and safe way for fishermen to get access to some great fishing. $17 a day? Heck you can't pull your own boat to the river and fish all day for less than $50! I'd love to try this!
Just goes to show ya how cheap and easy fishing can be! Fishing brings all kinds of folks together for many reasons. Looks like a great place to meet nice people and better yet, fishing people! This is a great concept and goes to show you that you don't need a 21 foot Ranger boat to catch beauties like that! If there is a will, there's a way! Great article and awesome video! Cane Pole, Chuck, I think some sort of trip to The Wisconsin River Road will be in our future. Just have to get some plans together. Maybe next Fall, this Fall and next Spring is already accounted for.
CG1, that bar on a barge trip you're talking about might only be for a couple of us. If everyone came to that, there'd prolly be trouble. lol
And Ship, no I could not bend those jigs. Maybe someone could, but not me. Shaping jigs like that is an interesting concept though. Thank you all for reading my story.
