Upgrade has started

Well some good and bad. The good--on the tail light that was out--popped out the old one--put the new LED one in--plugged it up with the original wiring and bingo worked like a charm and is perfect. That was the right side. On the left side the original wires are too short and with changing the wiring on that one I have to change it on 3 lights. Now the main problem is the place where these are grounded the bolt and nut are rusted--can't take either off easily--the head of the bolt is mostly rusted and the nut on the bottom is rounded off and rusted--so I'll either ground in a different place or drill the other out--whichever is quicker:) The other bad is some of the marker lights are one pole and some are two pole so I'm gonna have to get up under and cipher how many of each in the proper color. Nothing is ever as simple as you want:)

I'm missing something here. If it was plugged to original light, why won't it plug to new light?

the old light was quite a bit deeper than the new ones so the once on the left side (for some reason) either way you turn it is about 1 inch short. I figured out the grounding issue--will just ground withe the mounting bolts for the side markers on that side.

Mike, did your new lights not come with new plugs? If so just cut off old plug and splice in new one.

The tail lights did. The marker lights only came with one wire--which I haven't figured out yet because the light itself has two receptacles?
The single wire ones so far looks like will be for the two on the rear frame and the rest will be two wire--I should be able to just plug in the new marker lights other then the ones I have to redo the main hookups. But the one side marker I did a trial run with worked until I turned the blinker on then it went off and wouldn't come back on--not sure what that is about unless it was the wrong type of light? The way they look they all appear to be universal?

That marker could have lost it's ground. Sounds like they may be designed for self grounding. Might try taking a short piece of wire,clean a spot and try grounding it to see what happens. If not take one of those lights to work. Go up to KW on Millbranch. They should have a plug harness to fit it with 2 wires. Most all clearance and tail have the same type plug on them. If I can help just holler.

The LED marker lights I installed were self grounding. The problem is probably where the wiring harness grounds to the trailer, not at the light.

I think your right. Did some further inspection on the marker lights and the new ones are all self groudning so I won't need to get new plugs I can just rewire with the new connection and with using new bolts to attach the new brakets if I need to use the old two prong connections I can just attach to one of the new bolts.

Working out perfectly. I'm able to use All of the original connections (except the left tail light) Got all of the old ones drilled out and all of the left side installed. The rear 6 lights I will have to work new slices but no big deal.

Best of all--it's cheaper than I thought--10 lights, two boxes of connectors, some dielctric compound,16 #8-32 1" screws, nuts, and washers--85 bucks

Finishing tomorrow--couldn't get to any of it today. Had to get a couple of new ring terminals for my ground wires--making a new place to ground with 5/16 bolts.
It's kinda a fun job. I need to do something like this for a living lol.

Come fix mine when you are done. Got all the stuff, just hate lying on the ground. You could do it standing....:deadhorse:biggrin

JMO forget about using the frame for a ground on a boat trailer(really any trailer), run a ground wire and dump the connectors and soldier all wire to wire connections, grease the light plug connections, with led's you should never have another problem as long as you keep the water out of the led's,, want the ultimate setup run all new marine grade wire,, jmo for a trouble free long lasting setup,, in most cases much easier to work on it with the boat off of the trailer,,, hope this helps

I do agree that is the best way for sure but don't have the time right now fish too much :D This is a 22 year old Ranger so it has marine wiring and original lights. The only reason I'm changing all is due to the right tail light went out :D

One problem with pieceing together a "kit" you never know. One of the lights might be a bad one:banghead: got to kick up the last two anyway. I don't know what kind of paint Ranger uses on their trailers but that stuff is insane. It's making it tuff to make a new place to ground.
