Rickie & I went dam hunting today

A gentleman sent me some information about a inundated dam on Barkley Lake. This one is not at Eddyville.

You can see part of the lock chamber on the left side, in the center of the image on both sides is the dam.

tell me what equipment you're using please,
i see it's a Lowrance LSS 2, what does the version 2.2 mean?
and what is the fish finder your viewing it on,
how do you get the pictures so close up? mine always look a long distance away.

The images are a mix of my 12T and Gen 1 HDS 7. I'm not sure about the 2.2, my guess is it's the structure scan version. I use Photobucket for image hosting, if you click on the IMG. code, copy and then paste code in the body of the reply they will show up big. Don't use the "insert image" feature.

Awesome images, Justin. Rickie stopped by and we talked about the trip.

I plan on showing these to my Dad. I remember well watching he and my uncle fishing at the dam at Eddyville as a kid, before the lake was raised. Just never heard about Dam E and it doesn't show up on my lake maps. I'll see if Dad remembers this dam prior to the lake flooding in 65. My Dad worked on dams all up and down the Cumberland and Ohio so he may recognize many of the features.

There were four gates on the locks, and we were correct about the recesses in the walls. The gates moved into the recesses when they were open. Also the lock chamber was 52' X 280', pretty close to that 300' estimate.

I bet that one gate on the downstream side was, in fact laying down inside the lock chamber like we guessed...

Post'em up Don, I'm not going to beat on ya.

So the outside wall was just 3' or so wide...

And the dam itself was a "spillover" type dam..

And the wingwall upstream of the south gates doesn't angle out toward the center of the river as much as we thought..

Rickie I'm going to guess that it probably only held 4-6' of water back and in high water the boats just went over the dam like the old dams on the Ohio. These dams were for navigational purposes only, not to help with flooding control like the high dams we have now.

You guys must know somebody. Every time I says dam, I get black stars????

Only when you use "dam" as an adjective .... these guys are using "dam" as a noun :Rofl

And there is NO "N" in the word "dam" :Doh: (can't tell you how many times I've seen people talk about a dam ... and put the letter N on the end of it :banghead )

Alright Justin and Rickie. You already know where E and F are.

Now your mission, if you accept, is to find and post pictures of 3, 4 and 8.

I like history so I've been doing some reading. Construction was started on Lock E in January of 1918 and completed in the fall of 1922. Also in the fall of 1922 work was started on the dam portion and was completed in a few months. In 1933 congress approved the money to install wickets on several dams, E and F (Eddyville) included. With the wickets up the water level could be raised 3' (although it appears to me from the images they are 6-6 1/2' tall) they were primarily installed for flood control but also aided in navigation.

CSURP did all of the research and sent me a bunch of information on locks and dams on the Cumberland River. All I had to do was read and pick the info to post.

Scale models of the wickets.

Workers raising wickets, they were raised one at a time. A grappling hook would be thrown the water to catch the hook and then the wicket would be raised with a manual winch. I don't know what lock this is, it's constructed out of cut stone. E and F are concrete.

I'm going to guess the dark patches on top of the dam in these two images are where the wickets were attached.

i think that the river side wall was blown up but the bank side is still intact
