There a lot of different vises, all work for flies as well as jigs. It's main purpose is to hold what your tying, but some are better than others. You can spend about as much as you want on a vise. I a, partial to a True Rotary vise as I like to see what I am tying from all sides and there are other advantages as well if you use them. I carry the Peak brand of vise and I tie on a Nor-vise, so take a look at this study.
there is a good in depth study at this link....

I have my second one, like this one. About $35 off of ebay. It will hold with setscrew loose. My first would turn if setscrew was loose while lapping thread.

This is the vice that I currently have. As a beginner I find that it is really easy to use and I have not had any problems with it. My only complaint is that I wish it would rotate a little easier. I have a feeling that if I could I would get one of the Peak vices that Skip sales but the wife is going to make me tie a few hundred more jigs before she will let me go that route.
You should jump on into the hobby, there are boat loads of great information on this site and it really is rewarding to make your own lures.
Hope this helps,

Save up your $ and let Skip hook you up with a Peak. I bought one (not from Skip though I should have). Best move I ever made where tying is concerned.
The FlyFish Ohio review is excellent!!! there's another one by Hans Weileman that used to be on the Fly fisherman site but even after they came back with the new site that Article wasn't on it.
I know lot's of people like rotary but I haven't gotten the real urge to have one yet. My main vise is a Dyna-King Kingfisher that I have on an old Thompson base plate and works well for me, but I keep seeing the DK Barracuda (really like it but way more money than I'd want to spend) but that Peak keeps looking better and better.
I also tie flies and some of the generic/copy cat vises don't get good reviews on the fly tying sites. I screwed up big time as I could of had the Peak with all the extra add on's for $85!!!!! from a buddy on a fly site. When those guys upgrade they usually put the vise in the for sale section - it's another place to look!!
Yeah Doug, if you passed on an $85 Peak w/extras, I'd say you did th'dirty with the ol'pooch!!
I am probably upgrading to a pedestal peak rotary. what would be the best choice, a c clamp or pedestal?
Depends on where you tie. I like a "C" Clamp best because it's anchored so well then. I use a good bit of pressure when tying and even though a pedestal will still work where I tie I need one the lets me position it lower to keep my shoulder from having so much to do since my shoulder is shot. I use a fold out table that we added a drop down ledge. It's a 6 X12 dropping down and attached to the metal side part of the table and then it has another 6X12 coming from under that making a shelf where I clamp my vise. Both are the same vise, just one clamps to something and the other sits on top of a table or desk or what ever you tie on. It helped me a lot to have it lower.
Peak is the only way to go!!!!! You can't beat it for the money. I have one with the base and I LOVE IT!
