From what I've seen the year I've been here, not much Crappie fishing going on. I check the Washingtonlakes.com reports and rarely see anything about Crappie.
Yes it is a sad state of affairs here unfortunately. There are a lot of crappie here and by looking at past activity there are or were a lot of folks fishing for them. I don't know what happened but it all seemed to have died. Slab is going to send me some stickers that I will take around to some of the tackle shops around here to put in their windows to see if anyone else shows some interest.
Have you been getting out at all?
Been slow here for awhile now. Tons of guys out fishing and catching slabs......just not posting much I guess. Guys stop me all the time when they see the Crappie.com decal on my tow rig though. Crappie fishermen around these parts are a tight lipped bunch :o.
Haven't been out on the water in my yak for about a month. Been fishing for trout from the docks at Harry Todd Park and at Spanaway Lake.
I wish some of the folks who have been fishing for crappie here in Washington would chime in and those of us who are rather new could sure benefit from their experience.
Federal Witness Protection Program......just kidding lol. Still fishing just not posting much these days. Fish are biting good on Kapowsin, Ohop, Tanwax (nice fish this year), Rapjon, Sawyer (really nice fish this year but they are deep) and Union for sure. Heading to Potholes this weekend to checkout the night bite.
I love to catch crappies but every time I fish for them I get perch. They're good eating too, but just not crappies. I'm in Eastern Washington, with an almost non existant gas budget, so I'm limited to Newman Lake. Newman has crappies, but they are few and far between. In the mean time, I'll eat perch, but it really takes a lot for a meal. It think I'll try them on a fly rod next.
I thought I read somewhere that they sprayed the weeds in Ohop and the fishing was terrible.
Is that true?
Are you getting out anywhere?
I think I will go try Sawyer on Monday.
fishing in Washington state for panfish is usually excellent I have fished many lakes in your state even along the Columbia River has some excellent fishing number one on my list was Silverlake when I lived in Portland Oregon it was close by within a day's drive I know the information might be tough to get you can contact Oregon Bass panfish club they will deftly point you in the right direction you can contact him on the Internet.
Silver lake is in my to-do list of lakes.
I belong to the Western Washington Walleye Club and we go on outings for many species.
Too bad there are no Walleye in western Washington. We have to go down to the Columbia or over to eastern Washington.
It changed the way that the lake "fishes" if that's even a word lol. Removing the bad weeds has given the crappies access to the wood that was getting buried under it and the crappies are growing real nice in there. Numbers are high too....just like Silver Lake after the weeds where sprayed. You just have to fish a little deeper (like 12' to 15') during middle the day. They will still move up on the brush piles in 5-8' of water but not unless it's low light. If you find places where reeds meet brush they will hang in there most of the season.
Caught these guys on a very small Federal Way lake today. Most where 11" with two going right at 13". Fish where hanging on weed edges found along steep banks only. The bluegills where spawning so I think they have pushed the crappies off the better flats on these little lakes. Caught some huge bluegills...should have took some pics of them. Crappies where all eating bluegill fry. Find the right depths and cover...find the fry.....and you found the crappie. Sorry about the size I just started using photobucket again and have to resize everything.

Wow, Those are nice.
Thanks for the info on Ohop. It makes me feel better.
I've had in mind to fish the Columbia River here in Eastern Washington this spring in the sloughs. I've heard it can be decent, hopefully next spring I can get down to them to fish. During this spring I was usually fishing the I-82 ponds for crappie and going to Lyon's Ferry and fishing for catfish on the main river.
Did you ever make it out to Potholes? I've been fishing it off the dock during the day for the past month and been doing decent, catching 5-10 keeper crappie and a bunch of smaller ones every time I've made it up there. It might be a real good year next year, since a lot of the fish I've been catching have been around 8 inches. I might go there this weekend and try renting a boat since I've heard they're lowering the water and try for walleye off Goose Island.
Good luck on the Walleye at Potholes. Last time we went in June we didn't do too good but it was very high. We are heading over to Roosevelt Sunday for Walleye and hopefully some Crappie as well.
I've heard the docks at Mardon can be very productive for Crappie.
I didn't make it over that weekend. Had issues installing a new fuse block on my boat. We did go to Moses on the 14th. Never made it over to Potholes. Moses was on fire up crab creek (aka Parker Horn) on the sunken islands. I hope to head over that way at least once a week from here through Oct.
Yeah when my dad and I have went there in May we haven't had the best of luck with the walleye in Lind Coulee, only being able to catch one or two or getting skunked, it seems like every time we go there around that time the wind wants to blow like crazy so we don't go on the main lake. Most of the time we fish it during the summer and do well in our usual spots around the humps around Crab Creek, 3 areas around Goose Island, and one of the points in Lind Coulee.
Good stuff that you were able to get into fish up there. Never tried it out a boat in that area, I've only fished it once out a boat across from Cascade Park. Yeah I'm hoping to get out there too a lot until it starts to cool down, girlfriend kind of brought it up she wants to go catfishing out at Lyon's Ferry too though.
How's the water level down at Lyons this year? It's been years since I've been out there. Great place to fish...peaceful out there.
I may have to hook up with you guys out there in Spring for those walleyes. I do pretty good on Upper Goose but Potholes is tricky for me. I've done best in May working jigs around the back side of the little island on your right hand side as you head up Lind C. Hooked a nice channel cat off the island once too. Always wanted to try bank fishing that area at night but have never tried.
I haven't been back to Lyon's Ferry since my dad came over with his boat for our yearly catfishing trip in Mid-June so I'm not sure how it is now. It seemed like the water was low then though, I heard that people weren't having trouble going up the Palouse until it got lower around mid-May. Flows didn't really seem to be ripping through that bad when my girlfriend and I were fishing the main river in April and May.
I've heard it's good catfishing in Lind Coulee but I've never tried it, I know someone from another website caught a 27 pounder out of there last year or the year before using his ultra-light rods he was using to try and catch panfish. If the island you're talking about is the one I'm thinking of, that point seems to hold a bunch of fish in May.
I hope to get out to Lake Sawyer some time this week and try again for crappie. We just spent the week over on Lake roosevelt and didn't get a chance to fish crappie but did finally get into some Walleye on the Spokane Arm up around Porcupine flats. I stopped at Big Wally's in Coulee City and Coulee Playland in Electric city and they both agreed to put Crappie.com stickers up in the windows.
