Count the spines on the dorsal fin (the hard stickees on the fin on their back). Remember 5,6,7,8. 5 or 6 is a white crappie. 7 or 8 is a black crappie.

Off the lake and back in Grenada before 1030, ended up with 10 keepers and 9 throwbacks, all but 2 of the throwbacks were crowded legal hard.

It may be a white crappie, but he sure is colored up like a speck. I don't see any vertical bars on the fish like I do on the second fish Rees posted up. Can some white crappie not have the vertical bars?Quote:

Upon further review it has been determined that my so called white crappie I released this morning is in fact a SPECK. The 7th spine is broke off but ifn you count where they are coming out of his back there is no doubt he has seven spines.
