Where: Gaines Creek on Lake Eufaula( From 31 bridge up the creek as far as you can go)!

When: Saturday July 13

Sign up: 5:00-5:45am @ Hickory Point Boat Ramp

Tournament hours: 6:00am-12:00pm beating the heat!

Weigh-in site: Hickory Point Boat ramp

Entry Fee: 20$ per boat

Big Fish pot: 10$ per man

Rules: Same as CDC Tournaments with a few changes!
*This will be a one pole one bait challenge
*All boats will launch at Hickory point boat ramp.(This ramp is located east of Krebs on Adamson road) Go south 69 to 270 then exit on 31 highway east 3 miles to Adamson road, go till you see the water plant, turn left there!
*We will pay one place for weight of best 7! We will pay one place for big fish pott! Winner take all!
*The lake is Off limits, meaning any water past the bridge out in the lake!
*Gaines Creek is one if the best creeks in the State if Oklahoma, you will have 15 miles of creek, secondary creeks, flats, channels, break lines, ledges, log jams, lay downs, stumps, bushes, bodark trees, etc. if you have never been in this creek your in for a real treat. It is a crappies paradise!

Gaines Creek Report!

We have been averaging between 50-60 keepers a day for 2 weeks. Lots of .90-1.30lb fish with big fish up too 1.80lbs. Big CrappiePro Wasshappas, Bobby Garland Slab Slayers, and Yum Beaver tails gave all been good. Colors have been Pump Chart, Blk Chart, Red Chart, and pearl on occasion!

Eufaula boy Hot Tip: When you fish the creek in the summer you have to think SHALLOW! When we hear that as fisherman we thinks that's crazy, but these fish will be 3-5ft deep! Sometimes shallower. It's all about visible cover, if you see it fish it! There is a ton of it in this creek.

Challenge: You will catch lots if 1.0 lb fish, but the challenge will be to catch 7 1.50lb fish. I think 10.00lbs just might win this ;)

what eb said about fishing shallow believe him. was up there a few years ago with him it never got under 100 deg. and they were that shallow.

Swollencrappie may be in on this one. Never fished in that area but hey..what is 30 bucks.

Whisperer and my dad Gaston are in. Wish we had more of these summer tournaments from 6 to 12. Fishin is great during the summer and our C.Com tournaments skip all this good fishin, just sayin...

I'm just trying to make sure I understand this since I didn't fish any of the previous tournaments. My background with fly fishing causes my confusion, I'm sure. In fly one rod/one fly tournaments you must chose ahead of time the one fly you will use throughout the tournament. I'm guessing that the one pole one bait challenge in a Crappie tournament means you can only use one jig on one rod at a time (not restricted to one particular bait for the whole tournament.) Can you have other rods rigged in the boat? I found the tournament rules in an old thread but didn't really understand the "one pole one bait challenge" rule. Too much of a Geezer, I guess.

Would love to be able to fish this one, but my strength just isn't recovering from my ordeal(having a hard go of it). Plus I am sure the weather will be warming back up by then and I simply can't do it(to weak).

What it means is you can only have one pole in hand while fishing, no spider rigging or double dipping. Can't have multiple poles out at once. Yes you can have several different poles rigged and ready, just one pole in hand while fishing.

Im still learning to fish crappie but id love to participate and have never been to eufaula lake.

Ive got a couple questions:
Is that creek suitable for a trolling motor powered canoe?

Are the weigh-ins live fish only?
Ive got a stringer but the fish never last very long.

A trolling motor on a canoe would obviously restrict your range from the launch ramp but it would be doable. The creek is suitable but pretty big from Hwy 31 bridge down. The bigger problem would be keeping your fish alive. When I fished from a kayak I drug along a floating fish basket and it did a passable job of that. I wouldn't go with a stringer. You DO need to experience fishing down there tho'. It's loads of fun!

A friend recommended putting a bubbler in a cooler. Ill experiment with some ideas if I find one that works ill be there!

Scanoob, get you a good ice chest and put lake water in it with some fish alive additive, cool the water in it around 7 degrees cooler with the manual aerator. EB

Man I wish I could make this one. I grew up just a few miles away from hickory point and used to catfish out there all the time. I ain't been out there since my high school graduation party. Ah the good days. Anyway have fun guys and be safe.

She wants me to ask about her favorite bait..... are minnows legal in the tournament? so long as you only use one rod? ....... OK stop yelling at me she made me ask....

Yes you can use minnows, but only one rod at a time. You may have additional rods in your boat. EB

this sounds like fun especially for a basic beginner when it comes to JUST fishing for crappie.....wish I could participate but everyone who does I know you will have an awesome day of fishing

The family and I are planning a weekend of it. Can anyone recommend a camping area near by?

scanoob - really depends on what you want (need.) As far as camping, it's primitive. You can primitive camp there but the last couple of times I've been there nobody has been doing so in this heat. I believe the two closest COE sites would be Hwy 31 and then Elm Point. I have never camped at either or these but believe there is electricity at one of them. There might be some commercial camping near McAlester/Krebs. There are some nice campgrounds on the lake but that would isolate your family on Saturday.

You might check out Robber's Cave state park in Wilburton, also. Super nice and clean, and it's about the same distance from there to Hickory point as McAlester would be. Robber's cave has plenty of activities for the family too; pool, canoes, paddle boats, mini golf, etc...

Elm Point would probably be the closest campground for you, though (With Power). Not much left of the Hwy 31 campground area.

robber's cave/carlton lake would be a great place for the family to enjoy while you fish the tournament and very easy to get from there to hickory point via highway or county roads as adamson road goes from krebs to about 2 miles south of carlton lake on highway 2.

Gonna have to back out of this tourney due to a huge mistake I made. Dumped a pot of cooking grease on right hand and stomach. Skin grafts should happen monday or tuesday and then 3 or 4 weeks of healing and rehab. Will be good to go for the fall trail. Be careful when dealing with hot grease from frying fish.

I am so sorry my friend. That had to be incredibly painful. I also pray that you have a quick and thorough healing. I know you will be limited in what you can do for a while but when you get to the place where you can go fishing again, I would be happy to have you with me in the boat.

Thank you guys for your kind words and prayers. I am sad that for the next month there wont be any fishing or swimming but atleast I will be ready for the fall. Thanks again guys!!!!!

Dang son, that hurts just to look at.... Burns are painful I hope you get better quick and get back on the water.

Josh, I had a radiator blow up in my face a few years ago. I know the pain that you are going through and we are sending prayers and positive vibes your way man. I hope you get feeling better soon. Just remember to keep in clean and when you think it is clean make sure it is double clean. That part really sucks as you already know. Bobo...you are right. Cleaning it is by far the most painful thing. When I think absolutely no more skin can come off, it does. Definitly have a new respect for burn victims and a new respect for hot liquids. I do appreciate everything guys. Nice to know that there are so many willing to help if needed. I hope each of you know that I will always extend that same offer to each of you if I can ever help out in anyway.

I would suggest that you clean the wounds and then dab aloe vera juice on the burns to promote the healing. Many people do not know that aloe vera is a strong bacteriacide and will cut down on your pain as well. I have used it for years to accelerate the healing and reduce the scaring. my .02.

They have me using stuff called Elta Silver Gel. I remember as a kid my mom always had huge aloe plant and a container of white cream in the fridge. Always used both on burns. Aloe Vera has numerous uses. I know several who drink the juice daily.

They gave me a triple antibiotic crème. It is such a common thing that they name escapes me at the moment. They basically had me cover my face with it until I looked like I had been slimed like in Ghostbusters. LOL They said the crème would cut back on the scaring. I got really lucky in that aspect and really didn't get much if any of it. Neosporin is what it is called. They told me the silver stuff would cause scaring and recommended the Neosporin instead. I would listen to the docs though. They were in school when we were out in the woods. LOL Get feeling better and take care. Bobo
