and does sled cr. road have a ramp to launch from?
That's a good question. I am gonna take a day off soon and wanted to go to sledd creek also. They should have already moved out but I haven't been to know for sure
They are done. Tried some last week and no fish. Been catching a few crappie and catfish.
Several reports floating around on the net said the bluegill and shellcracker were biting surprisingly well all of last week. I have no idea what that means for today or the coming week but there's several of those positive reports out there. They also said the spawn is just about over with...makes me sad.
Big crackers can be had throughout the summer if you know how to target them and what time of day...morning and late evening in fairly deep water works pretty well. You may not catch but a dozen or so but with the size structure it doesn't take to many to have a good mess.
Bluegill and Redear are still bedding on Lake Barkley. I caught 75 nice bluegill off beds on Friday afternoon, then guided for two folks yesterday (Sunday) afternoon for about 4 hours. They caught over 100 bluegill with many of them being the best size I've seen this spring....(I'm talking approaching Reelfoot Lake quality.) They also caught 9 nice redear mixed in with the bluegill, and two really nice catfish. All the fish were caught on Grizzly jigs. BTW, just for information, we didn't keep a single fish. We were just fishing for the fun of it.
Hmm,I have never caught the size and quality of Gills at Reelfoot I have on Ky/Barkley. I hear a lot of folks say Reelfoot is way better but my freezer is full of big Ky Lake gills and Redear. I must be doing something wrong at Reelfoot. Gills should move up again (unless I am misinformed) and spawn around full moon if nothing weatherwise kills it. Won't be like May and June but better than nothing...
Thanks everyone for your input, I hope I can come down before the weekend to try and catch some gills. Fishing around sled creek ramp bays is the only place I know where to fish for gills.. Thanks again for your help.
Killum, I guess you must have been doing something wrong at Reelfoot. Having fished all three lakes (Reelfoot, Barkley, and Kentucky) all my life, I have to say that the average size of Reelfoot Lake bluegill has historically always been better than Ky or Barkley. Probably still is even though I'll admit that in the last few years bluegill fishing on both of the big lakes has really improved.
Mebbe so but Let me be clear. I am not saying I didn't catch fish at Reelfoot or they were dinks. I fished there in 07-09 and caught a ton of gills in the pads, off the Cypress roots and got into some good ones on the beds a couple times. I decided in 2010 to try KY lake and Stayed at Moors fishing in the bays close by and my wife and I were amazed at the size of the gills. Granted we do our spring trip in early May which is usually the sweetspot but honestly we stopped going the extra distance to Reelfoot and have had similar success each year, even with the crazy spring we just had. I don't have the historical experience you have but for me in the last 6-8 years my biggest average gills have been from KY and Barkley. we catch a lot more redear there too. Last time I was @ Reelfoot Billy Blakely actually got up to look at the one redear I had in the cooler. It was a nice one but not to compare with these from May this year. I love Reelfoot and I will try it again once I move closer, but it has been my humble experience that KY Lake has recently produced bigger fish for ME. Oh and that Hog in the middle my wife caught! Tight Lines!

Nice catch Killum! I saw you that day taking pics by the cleaning station. I was in the pontoon boat behind you in the picture! BTW, looks like the gills are gonna start up again.....The Kahuna said so!!
Dang wish I'd known you were there. I'd have enjoyed meeting ya in person. We caught all those one the east side of the lake in the bay across from Arlington Pt. Had a nice pile of gills and cats too! That was a crazy week. Jacket weather to sunburn in 3-4 days time. What a Spring! We caught most of our fish the latter part of the week but always great to be on the water. Hope to come down in Oct again for a long weekend. May see ya again then. Unless I can talk the wife into a short trip...:fish
