Don't know what a Bill Gant type jig is?
Olebigun also has Paps Hair Jigs....they are great for trolling or side pulling
So what is special about their jigs? I just don't know of them or their jigs, but always like to learn something new.
Skip I see nothing special about them, they look like all the other bucktail jigs on the market but the tail is cut off straight.
Paps Hair Jigs are tied just like Joel's ( Oldbiguns grandfather) used to tie them.....they are very durable and last a long time. They are heavy jigs for trolling and side pulling......They come in three sizes 1/16 1/8 and 1/4 oz. They catch fish too, that's whats special.
its just a thread neck buck tail jig very easy to tie and Bill Gant ties a good one he is a legend in the crappie fishing industry
I watched them (Gants) win the Crappie Masters Classic on the AL River side pulling their jigs. Good folks. Taught me there is always a way to catch crappie. You just got to do it the way the crappie want it.
Thanks, guys we also tie a little live rubber in them for action and we dip them in an epoxy to keep the hair from coming out which I have seen happen in other jigs before, they are proven to catch crappie for sure!
oldbigun found a picture of your jigs I like them the squared off tails are something different but can see how they would work as they are thick. I knew that you were tying something else in just didn't know what. I do a jig that is similar just not as full as yours with no live rubber, I tie a way that the hair doesn't have a chance to come out but then I lose them before they wear out.Lols. Thanks for sharing some of the info would love to hear more history on that jig (hint, hint).
Redman
it sounds like a simple jig to tie I believe there is a filler in New York that makes one similar to it he uses hair with living rubber they are nice-looking jags but I do not see them on the market here they are a eastern market jig I would have to do some research to find his site again. he sent me some samples they are someplace here locked up I will have to get them out and take some pictures and post them I typically did not care for the way that they tied them but they seem to do well on the market from my understanding from talking to him on the phone he was a sales rep . I do use living rubber in quite a few of my jigs we have quite a few different color combinations I do like to superthin it has a ton of action I have bought 5 pounds of weight a few years back we will never use that much in my lifetime but we do use it because I do love the action of rubber more so than vinyl.
