I live in Starkville and the nearest bait shop is 30 miles away. Have any of you ever tried using minnow traps? Do we even have any wild minnows or would I end up with basket full of pool perch and angry water snakes?

I bought a couple of the basket traps from Wal-Mart in an attempt to save money on bait, and honestly, it seems more like I wasted money on the baskets. I tried them at Enid, and I didn't have any luck at all. I am sure that I just didn't find the right place to put them.
Using them at smaller lakes has been more effective, but I don't usually go to smaller lakes. If you have a place to put them out where you can leave them for awhile, some say overnight, you might catch some nice minnows. I just hung mine over the side of the boat when I was fishing in small lakes, and I caught what I needed for that fishing trip.
The minnows are there. Finding them is the thing. It's easier (for me) in a small hole of water.
We did good catching large silver sides at Horn Lake (lakeview) when it was open. The ones we caught at the cut off were smaller and didn't get the big fish.
STARKVEGAS HAS CHANGED SINCE THE 70'S/ EARLY 80'S . WAS A GOOD BAIT SHOP AT THE ICE HOUSE AT THE CORNER OF 82 AND WHAT EVER THAT HWY . THE HOSPITAL IS ON .:scratchhead
Unless you place them in a farm pond that has been stocked with minnows.......about all your going to catch is baby bass and baby bream

Thanks, donald. I didn't know that. That'll sure beat the heck outta driving to Columbus. And Eagle, it changed from the time i graduated in 03 to when i moved back in 09. You can't buy crickets in this town unless you go to Wal Mart and i usually avoid that place like the plague.
You catching any?
Minners or fish? I was gonna put off getting a trap until i looked into them a little more. Caught 7 good fish this morning and as many short fish.

I'll have to take you up on that, donald. I'd love to pick up some tips. I work shift work and am off 4 days at a time so maybe we can work somethin out.
I've never done either, but I can't imagine something being better than that THUMP
I have put out as many as half a dozen traps at one time (combo of homemade/store bought). I would say put your traps (when/if you get them) in a branch/or small creek, not the bigger/slower moving water.
With the "homegrown" minnows I have only had limited success, but man oh man- with the small 1&1/2" to 2" baby brim...... look out! My local crappie love them, and they are tough- you can usually catch 3-4 fish on the same baby brim.
Of course check your local regulations as to the legality of using brim for bait.
